Game of the Year for all Years: Shadow of List Hoarders

1998again

Here’s some other stuff I want to mention from 1998 which I have played. If you think I’m missing something, its probably because I haven’t played it. Such as Grim Fandango. I know.

Resident Evil 2 Its way better than RE1. I still wasn’t in love with something about these games. So I gameshark pro’d an ammo code. But, left my health untouched. Shooting the magnum and needing a step back, was awesome.

Xenogears I’ve already said much about this game in other threads. Its one of my favorite games ever. I love the art direction. I love the 3D backgrounds with 2D sprites. I love the battle system. I love giant robots. I love the innovative direction and camera angles used at times. Which were made possible by the 3D engine. A certain base hideout invasion, comes to mind. But also something like cracking open doors and peaking through the crack, early in the game outside Ramsa’s castle. Or swooping the camera down a market street. Lots of little things made possible, which were not possible in 2D RPGs. And because you can fully rotate the environments, many of the areas you visit are just that much more detailed. I love the characters and how they all have some depth revealed about them. The Yggdrasil is the best transport in an RPG ever. And that’s because inside of it is a fully fleshed out ship/city/giant robot hanger. Late in the game is a fighting arena which kinda plays like Virtual-On. Its a great game. Flaws and all.

1080 Snowboarding Before Tony Hawk made skateboarding a gaming thing…snowboarding had a moment. And 1080 was the best of 'em. Its just a solid game, which people talked about a lot. Its kind of exactly what you would want out of a snowboarder. And isn’t yet too far gone with all the tricking and flashyness of much later extreme sports games.

Parasite Eve what if a resident evil game was made by Squaresoft?..but they couldn’t help themselves and messed with it? Instead of real-time tank combat, it has a tactical turn based system. You are free to run around, so you dodge attacks in real time. But your attack turns are based on an ATB time bar like Final Fantasy. and you target individual parts of enemies, for various effects and stategy. All of your equipment is RPG’d with classes and enhancements and ammo types. And borrowing from final fantasy, you have scenes where characters have dialogue and story exposition. And there’s a distinct melancholy to the characters and the presentation of the whole game. I loved it.

International Superstar Soccer 98 another game my brother and I got really into. Its really addictive, as it has a sneaky amount of subtlety. and it has a lot of teams and stadiums. And some interesting game modes. So, it lasts you awhile.

Shogo this is a FPS with heavy influence from Japanese anime such as Patlabor. There are human sections and giant robot sections (which don’t really play much different, aside from different weapons. And in general, it pretty much plays like a slower paced Quake II). its on the Lithtech engine, which was pretty slick. Features dual wielding and some cool weapons. it has sprawling maps which can seemingly seemlessly transition from large outdoor areas to tight indoors areas. They even tried some cityscapes. It doesn’t really stand the test of time. But, it was pretty cool, in its time. And In retrospect, I bet Halo took a lot of queues from this. Becuase watching a few videos just now, it reminds me a lot of later parts of Halo.

Rush 2: Extreme Racing (N64): Finally, no more quarters. All those ferry trips to Seattle were now at my house. My brother and I spent a lot of time messing around on these tracks. Going off track. Finding jumps where there isn’t mean to be. etc.

Half Life it just plays so good. I think people playing this now, let first impressions affect them too much. As I see a lot of people quick to suggest HL Source or Black Mesa. Let the game happen for a little bit. It really pics up and you won’t care anymore about the graphics. I promise. The shooting mechanics didn’t just feel like slower Quake II. Its quite a huge breakaway from those early staples of the genre. And there’s all sorts of inventive weapons and excellent AI to use them against. And there are also inventive enemy types which create new and interesting scenarios, much different from other FPS. I like it better than HL2. Its just more fun.

Suikoden 2 by now, RPGs have hit their 32 bit stride. Technically speaking, Suikoden 2 is mainly 2D and seems more like it came much earlier than 1998. and is therefore, not a giant leap over the late 16 bit games. It only makes limited, rudimentary use of 3D effects. It has no FMV to speak of. It doesn’t have CG pre-rendered backgrounds. But, it doesn’t care. It just grabs you up in its arms and takes you on a grand JRPG adventure. Its filled with character, has a large and detailed world, it pulls every trick, and its all done strongly via great and fun writing.

So I am slowly working on this, and making a list. This takes time! It’s not easy for my brain to think like this! And I know I am getting years wrong sometimes or whatever. I don’t care. Also, I had a lot of internal debate about what makes a game the best of that year. Is it universal acclaim (no), personal taste (yes), influence (also sometimes yes) and so on. Argh lists!

So anyhow, here’s the 80s

Year Game
1980 Missile Command
1981 Wizardry
1982 Robotron 2084
1983 Xevious
1984 Tetris
1985 Super Mario Brothers
1986 Dragon Quest
1987 Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest
1988 Mega Man 2
1989 Ducktales

1980 is when I was born (hi yes I am old) and so I started there. Not a lot of explanation for these, but I will put it down below anyhow

Explanations

1980: Missile Command
It’s a game about how fucked we are in a nuclear war and that was pretty important to try to communicate at the time. Obviously, plenty of other things were communicating that as well, but.

1981: Wizardry
Hell no, I have never played this game, and hell no, I probably won’t any time soon, but I figure that it has to be here because holy shit did so much seemingly spawn out of this game.

1982: Robotron 2084
Fucking totally awesome videogames.

1983: Xevious
Yeah, this game kinda sucks now, but I love some vertical scrolling STG action, so it seems pretty important to put it here.

1984: Tetris
Fucking duh.

1985: Super Mario Bros
Fuck, the weight of influence is too much. I wanted it to be Space Harrier, but I knew it could not realistically be.

1986: Dragon Quest
Yeah, I didn’t get to play it till a couple years later, but who cares. So pure, so weird, and again one of those things that is responsible in some way for a whole lot of other things I enjoy, so.

1987: Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest
Such an openly hostile game. Scared the fuck out of kid me to the point where I hid the cartridge so I could sleep well into my teens.

1988: Mega Man 2
Metal Man has basically been my weird almost religious figure for a long time. He’s got the best weapon! But it also can be used to easily murder him! It’s great.

1989: Ducktales
The first game I ever beat completely on my own. Still a game I try to play every Thanksgiving if I can.

Other Notes and Shit I Figured Out While Doing This

So 1982 it turns out, despite me turning 2 on the last day of the year, is actually a pretty influential year of games for me, but not in 1982. So my parents were…not well-off at all, but my dad was always a tech nerd, so eventually, probably several years later, we got a ColecoVision (probably on sale somewhere or used) and later than that, we had a Coleco Adam (which was the PC that attached to the ColecoVision). So because of this, I have a lot of memories of playing Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom, a Sega arcade game from 1982 that was ported to the Adam on a casette tape. But I also played a lot of Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel’s Castle (a ColecoVision cartridge) and Zaxxon (I think a cartridge, but maybe a tape) way after 1982. I probably beat Smurfs before I beat Ducktales, but the game just instalooped, so I consider that not really beating shit.

Also I learned that there is still an annual convention for Adam fans called AdamCon and it was apparently in Cleveland this year and I did not go, what the fuck.

1983 is apparently when Stellar 7 came out? I did not play it until the PC DOS port in the early 90s though. Huh!

1984 brought the release of a game I cared about a lot that only one other person I know gave a shit about, my childhood friend Alex. That game is Ballblazer, a weird one-on-one scifi future soccer game for Atari by Lucasarts. We played the shit out of that in 1989-1991 or so. Also the sequel, Ballblazer Champions, was one of the first PS1 games I bought for myself.

whoa how do you make fancy chart lines like that, also i like your list

For real, how did you do that?

It’s just markup, using | between things. Though protip, you can just copy paste from a Google spreadsheet and it will do this as well.

So, for example:

|Year|Game|
| --- | --- |
|1980|Missile Command|

1985: Space harrier
1986: Legend of zelda

1987: JJ & Jeff - The tacky jokes, excellent music (which is sometimes quite somber) and outrageously hostile environment makes this game a meditation on the inseparable nature of humor and death

1988: Gradius ii (don’t feel like putting smb3)
1989: mother

1999 is jam packed. But, I’m gonna try to identify some true GOTY candidates. Then, some highlights.

GOTY candidates

Soulcalibur (Dreamcast version) Soulcalibur on DC wasn’t just better looking than its Arcade version. It was one of the best looking games ever made. I bet the ToysRUs kiosks for this game were some of the most played ever, to that point in time. It was a real head turner. and the gameplay is classic. Depth and mastery, if you want it. But also, somehow very accessible for pickup and play with friends. Street Fighter and King of Fighters were well into their maturity, by this point. But Soulcalibur came seemingly from nowhere and offered a bridge for everyone to come and play. but also to stay and master. A gobsmackingly beautiful bridge. Tekken would still need a few more years, to get to that level of game. DOA, too. Namco struck early gold with this one. I didn’t own a Dreamcast. But, my best friend did. I spent a lot of time at his place, playing this and other Dreamcast games.

System Shock 2 I think Toups recently played this and liked it pretty well. Which I think is a good sign, for a game this old, of this style. System Shock 2 was super immersive with its action-rpg elements and pretty scary, in its time. It was very effective. Something happened here and you’re gonna find out what, while faced with danger. I actually didn’t play it until probably about 2001 and still found it to be very captivating and detailed.

Quake III: Arena and Unreal Tournament Pick your poison. Both are great games. But people tended to cling to one or the other. I like 'em both. I liked UT for the extra modes like CTF and Assault. But, I am REALLY fond of Quake III’s deathmatch modes. To me, there is just no better deathmatch. Maybe ever. Quake III deathmatch is tops right now today. The only game ever to give me eye strain and a burst eye vessel.

*jesus I almost forgot
Final Fantasy VIII I loved so many things about it. The art direction. The technology boost which allowed even better integration of FMV with interactive portions of the screen. Which they used for some really awesome presenatation. The draw system. Triple Triad GOTY 1999. The 3D graphics during battles were awesome. The story does take a dip late in the game. But its still fun and one of the best RPGs on PSone. I had it pre-ordered for several months. After I beat it, I let a new friend borrow it. And then his mother ended up suing my mother over an unfair dispute about a horse saddle which my Mom bought from her. But this lady insisted it was rented and now essentially stolen. My mother lost the case. I never got FFVIII back…

I didn’t get on the Tony Hawk train until much later and in a way you may not expect.

other games to highlight. I’ll try to be more brief

The Longest Journey Its an adventure game. Its pretty light on the puzzling. But its big on character. Good story. Good voice acting. Good backgrounds and visual styles. And this song

Gran Turismo 2 A whole lot more of everything, with very little negative. Includes Dragula.

Incredible Crisis A game of mini-games. often very difficult due to unforgiving inputs for the minigames. But, once you figure it out, this game is probably the single largest dose of Japanese zanyness to ever be packaged as a videogame.

Silent Bomber this game is what I always wanted Bomberman games to play like. Fast, intuitive, bombing on command. I love this game. You should play it. Its very good and feels unique.

Driver its an attempt at creating a game which is constantly a car chase scene like the movies. And it kinda succeeds. The game kinda drags as you get deeper into it. As there wasn’t a large amount of variety. But the first portion of the game is pretty exhilerating. Although not a sim, it feels like its leaning more towards some realistic inspiration. Rather than something really arcadey. Although it is absolutely arcadey. What?

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Really ambitious. Very good PSone graphics and animation. Excellent gameplay mechanic which shifts the environment to an alternate dimension in realtime, twisting and changing level geometry in the process. Many puzzles and traversal options are based around this. Cool fighting mechanics and spell system with impaling and lighting stuff on fire, etc. However, later game segments can be pretty difficult. As it lacks a map feature, while you are often moving and tracking over pretty large distances (or gliding with your wings ffffffff). And it can be pretty obtuse about where to go next. Still, a pretty amazing technical achievement on PSone. Albeit the Dreamcast version looks flat out amazing.

Dino Crisis I liked this better than Resident Evil stuff. I actually bought this at release and beat it without using gameshark codes for ammo or health. While RE3 has really detailed pre-rendered backgrounds and does have some small improvements to the controls: Dino Crisis is simply a cut above. The 3D environments allow for the camera to follow the player down a hallway. creating views and tension which were impossible with pre-rendered backgrounds. Dinosaurs are cooler than zombies. Regina is awesome. It just works for me in ways which RE did not. Even though RE2 and 3 were overall more complex in puzzles and the variety of environments.

Jagged Alliance 2 Some of the best western strategy rpg gameplay ever. Very detailed, fine grained gameplay. You have to consider all sorts of stuff like distance, cover, bullet spread, skill of the specific character doing the shooting, etc. Creating your team of mercs is super fun. But you gotta manage money, so you can’t always hire the best ones. The story has an option to be Sci-fi or not. The story isn’t great or anything, which is why the Sci-fi twist feels totally fine and helps keep it fun. Its all about the gameplay here. You can have a blast just getting into random battles.

Front Mission 3 giant robots. excellent gameplay mechanics. particularly how you could steal other wanzers mid battle. Especially needed if yours was disabled or functionally unable to attack. The game has no levels to explore or world map or anything like that. Everything outside of combat is via background images and text bubbles. but, the script is really good and I felt interested the entire time. the game has two different possible branching points, at which the story can change a lot. Has a fake internet which you can use to send emails, visits websites, initiate downloads, etc. Cool 3D graphics effects during the fights. I think my only complaint is that the enemy A.I. doesn’t push you hard, very often.

Worms Armageddon There’s nothing else like Worms. And this is the best 2D version. They really perfected the whole thing.

Damn, I forgot about Tomba!, for 1997. The wiki lists I’ve been using didn’t have it on there.

Tomba is quirky and weird and funny. It kinda reminds me of The Magical Quest: Starring Mickey Mouse (SNES). And it has cool 2.5D platforming gameplay where you can go into the background and even rotate it to reveal new stuff.

I wish I had played all the Wario games

Silent Bomber is one of the best games. I keep replaying it every few years. It just does so much right and it has never been replicated.

so far i know 1981 is tempest, 1982 is moonnpatrol, 1983 is blaster, 1984 is balloon fight, 1985 is i robot, 1986 is bubble bobble, 1987 is air fortress, 1988 is ninja warriors, 1989 is ducktales, and 1990 is skate or die 2

reasons: tempest is still being made because its perfect

in moon patrol you can shoot forward, shoot up OR jump and the background city is BEAUTIFUL

blaster is the sequel to robotron that does IM ROBOTRON BUT SUPER and gets it right

balloon fight is cute, endless mode is a cellphone game with no ads

i robot is the first game to have a non game mode where you pay money to dick around in DOODLE CITY and you get to make art with game assets

bubble bobble is the most important co-op game ever made. figuring out what power ups do pre internet is an activity that’s never coming back

AIR FORTRESS!! I THINK I ACTUALLY WROTE ABOUT THIS FOR OLD WIKI but its still uses music as a timer in SUCH a scary way

ninja warriors, its my favorite beat em up. NO I HAVEN’T PLAYED THE SWITCH ONE GIVE IT TO ME FOR CHRISTMAS

ducktales was the first game i completely beat because its one of rhe few nes platformers that makes sense

SKATE OR DIE 2 BEST MENU MUSIC I STILL PLAY RAMP MODE LIKE ONCE A MONTH

oops i was literally gonna do two years and i did a lot more, that’s why there’s no formatting

I love Balloon Fight but I’d have a hard time putting it on a list that doesn’t already have the superior Joust

balloon fight is cuter and i played it when i was a child, joust also doesn’t have the endless mode

joust shouldnt have come out in moon patrol year

strong points, but Joust has that micron of better flapping momentum, and the repeated incredible edge-testing friction of higher/lower

Let’s redo Balloon Fight’s endless mode with obstacles you skip off the top of to build momentum (but don’t skip up into the spikes above!)

a micron of better flapping does not replace moon patrol

im thinking about the sound effects again though, ahh those fuckin noisy flaps
