Game Feel Anomaly

in the first Little Big Adventure you take damage when you run into walls. It’s very funny because when you take damage in those games your hero reels back and clutches his head and yells “UUGH!”

Force power fast running in KoTOR is pretty satisfying.

The way Aya Brea runs in Parasite Eve is not satisfying.

The Ninja Turtles do flips during jumps, in pretty much all if their 8 and 16 bit games.

Skiing in Tribes was originally an exploit, which the devs then made a standard feature in subsequent games.

Part of the problem was they marketed it like Tony Hawk when it was actually a lot more The Club, yeah.

The Club was as fun as it thought it was. The Club Owns

Oh no doubt, I love the Club. Bulletstorm was trying to a similar thing (high score runs etc.) with some different mechanics around it, but then got stuck with the demand of having a story mode to link it all together, burying the high scoring fun part of the game. It might not have worked as well as the Club did, fair, but the marketing did it no favors when it tried to make it out to be free form stunts ala THPS, instead of maximizing scores on limited resources ala The Club.

At least the story was kinda a funny deflation of mid 00s shooter toughguys, but yeah, it didn’t even need to be there, and gatekeeping the actual game behind it was a silly mistake.

Black vs Bulletstorm vs Bodycount

(Huh, all Bs)

Did anyone even play Bodycount? I heard nothing about that game.

I was going to play it but then it got mediocre reviews and a few people here who played it at the time were not impressed so I ended up not playing it.

Played the first couple levels of Black again recently when it became backwards compatible for xbones. It was still a lot of fun.

Okay so this is extremely my jam and I’m also pretty bad at it. I’ve gotten to the aquifer once.

I bought it on my phone then proceeded to buy it on Steam like 2 days later because controller. I’m not much better on PC but it feels nicer and I get longer combos.

I love this game, and yeah the gunboots are deeply satisfying. Controlling downward velocity in such a granular way is a real game feel anomaly treat.

When i think about sliding, it just can be VANQUISH, in all its caps-glory.

Also, iirc, there is some cool-down phase when you stop moving, and then some detail on your suit changes? Like, Sam not just lights a cig, but some vents close or open?
I haven’t played it for… geez, probably 5?6?7? years now, but that stuck around…

Sliding against a black star field forever in Heavy Nova.
