i think if you respond to every other instance of someone saying ā€œ[x] thing about [y] game is so good!ā€ with ā€œnah I disagreeā€ and frequently get into multipage arguments that start that way, for like a decade, you probably have to live with the reputation as ā€œguy who does thatā€

Iā€™m gonna be the contrarian of this thread and summon every 2004 internet poster from the abyss by saying that Doom 3 aged better than Half-Life 2 (not counting expansions/spin-offs for either game).

doom 3 is monster closets and audio logs the game

all the guns feel bad and the level design doesnā€™t exist

That part is a highlight, for sure. HL2 could have used more of that. Rather than physicas stacking boxes; give me more opportunities to dispatch combine with physics.

Huh? The Warthog is in the first level and the end of the game is an extended sequence via Warthog. Not to mention the Warthogging in between. The Warthog is iconic, due to its single player presence.

Haloā€™s movement is the way it is, due to being console exclusive, requiring controller input. They likely took a heavy look at Goldeneye and iterated on that, with a dual stick setup. The jumping, various weapons, and firing modes all likely contributed to the feel. If you can get past how slow Halo feels, its actually very well thought about and polished in how the movement services the tools and mechanics. Also, how the enemies move and react. Play it on higher difficulties or play the multiplayer, to really feel this at its most.

I mean, around release, one of the things people/review WERENā€™T complaining about, was the movement and controls.

Halo 1ā€™s biggest problems are the repetitive environments 3/4 of the way through, as well as some backtracking.

*Iā€™m not even the biggest Halo fan, really. But I canā€™t deny its strengths.

In comparison: HL2 Episode 1 via Orange Box on PS3 feels like shit. Whoever made that port, did not take much time to consider controller use. Iā€™ve never tried any of the others. I know the original Xbox port for HL2 had a lot of care taken and I wonder if the controls for that feel better than the HL2 ports?

This made me think a bit. There are so few games that live on their narrative connection to actual past events of prior numbered franchise games. Like probably 95% of videogame sequels donā€™t actually need to be sequels. I dunno what this says about HL2 specifically but thank you for this insight

Setting connection is way more important. For instance, Re: that Episode 1 gravity gun-only thing, it couldā€™ve been a sidestory starring a resistance robot with gravity guns for arms.

The commitment to making each game ā€“ for no real reason except a cramped conception of what ā€œsequelā€ means ā€“ part of a linear story about one particular protagonist is an unforced error in the HL series.

wrong. the basic pistol in HL2 is amazing.

They made it even better in Episode 2, but it was already the case that the best gunshooting in all of Half-Life 2 is pistol-sniping the cops in the early game.

Thatā€™s exactly what I was thinking. I havenā€™t played HL2 in years (this thread has made me want to revisit all of the games)

but my most vivid memories are escaping the initial housing complex and bopping all of the cops in the head

Is there an Episode 2 pistol mod for original HL2

I really just hate the assault rifles. both of them. half life 1ā€™s assault rifle was so much better, and they were generous enough with the explosive rounds to where you could actually use them.

all the other guns in hl2 are great. I kind of hate the setpieces that require heavy usage of either AR. they are the weakest parts of the game.
