ppl slag off artist driven game dev but what youre highlighting feels like a strong example where dedicated visual artists should have been consulted

One of the reasons I am pro real time rt is that it makes 3d artists’ jobs way easier! But as a corollary it also makes people with poor artistic instincts way more able to muck things up if no one stops them

You know how we are still drawn to early cg animation (mind’s eye, animusic, etc), those were all rendered out with ray traced lights and reflections. That’s why no video games ever captured that look. real time ray tracing finally makes it possible for games to look like that in real time, but no one is pursuing that aesthetic (yet)

This technology isn’t limited to the current dreadful trend towards photorealism and it can be used to distinct artistic ends that were unavailable before now

i wicked dont envy 3D artists for IDEALLY needing to know 2D animation principles, real world film technique, & whatever current shit is considered cutting-edge eye-gouging 3D graphics

and then like to be a piecemeal part of like remaking half-life 2 20 years later…
its a thing where the original artists should have been consulted at every step… hl2 has a very distinct visual style right down to its textures, it cant be recaptured just by fancy nu photoshop tools

I dont feel like I can form a coherent opinion on the specific thing here without knowing to what degree the artist was ā€œeh good enoughā€-ing it.
I generally don’t think games should be updated or if they are it should be a in a way that can be toggled. Increasing a frame rate, draw distance etc seems fine but once you replace textures you’re doing too much. 3D models waaay too much. Its like updating an old book with modern language and presenting it as definitive, its crass.

Just in this screenshot the mood is changed. The time of day is different. The scene looks warmer, the vines are lusher. I associate that yellow fuzzed out street light glow with muggy summer nights in florida. The glazed bricks reflecting distant lights reduce the dreariness substantially. This town looks ready to come back to life at any moment.

Can’t help but think Engy will be useless in all but like 2 setpieces, poor guy

he’ll be really fucking good at those setpieces though

i absolutely want to playthrough as Scout they started the trailer off with the exact moment i thought of as soon as i heard of this mod lol

It being compatible with other Source campaigns makes me want to see the Team Fortress 2 cast in Dark Messiah, E.Y.E. or Zeno Clash.
