FUCK YEAH DRAGON QUEST (Part 1)

this energy is verging on upsetting. Is she hyperventilating? Is she on speed?

is this all pre-recorded dialogue for the game, or is this somebody actually playing the game and flipping out?

that clip is a highlight reel/translation of her 12-part live-streamed playthrough of DQ5 and all of it is that chaotic and high energy: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9jli3ZqRhJAeuTnlWFNg3421k4Tf-mDw

I have no idea how she still has a voice left

dang i was hoping there was a dragon quest casino game where you had a gambling addict as a sidekick.

Actually I am translating this (very intermittently over weeks/months), while @offalynne is doing the layout work and everything else. But yes! Please check it out because the more people read it the more motivated and less lazy I will be about finishing it off

No worries at all! Thanks so much for promoting the project here in this thread - I just started translating the next chapter a couple days ago and knowing that you and others are still paying attention is really heartening

DQXI for Switch is on sale in the eShop right now.

That’s still $41.99 too much imao.

Dragon Quest XI is among the greatest JRPGs I’ve ever played, and I’ve played some real bullshit

Taking a smoke break in the Japanese OG version, taking a break break in the US NES version, and pissing in the river in the DS version.

Maybe if more j-games had kana only text options I could actually play them, though I know that’s not a realistic want.

I recently learned about an app called Yomiwa that OCRs photos of kanji, it sounds like what you want. I tried it on Phantasy Star 4 yesterday and although sometimes it’s a bit finicky and requires a second photo, it seems to be able to recognize low-res videogame glyphs just fine most of the time. Way faster than searching a dictionary by radical.

I was using a program (I mentioned it on the uhh, god what was that stupid SMT knock-off called? that episode of SNEXploration) that also does this, as well! It worked pretty well. Uh… Kanjitomo, I think it was. That might also be worth looking into if you’re emulating on your PC because you can have the overlay on over the emulator and then select the text.

That looks cool and helpful, will check out both!

there’s no screenshotting involved with kanjitomo, so that’s a plus, but it can be a bit finicky when it comes to Japanese fonts that are too small and blocky. You should be good with PSX and PS2 games, and any game that uses a pretty large font. Or, just play with the emulator at a larger than native size (i hate doing this! but i suppose it might be necessary).

(eta: should add, this is based on my experience with a version of the program from a few years ago, so there’s a good chance it’s a bit better now if it’s been updated at all).

looks like it’s been updated recently!
