That sucks they had to reboot the game but I’d rather they do that and get it right than put out something they’re not fully confident in.
Plus there are still several Dragon Quests I haven’t fully experienced so maybe I’ll get a couple more under my belt before Beyond Dreams.
What they showed looked cool though.

first main dragon quest game after the original twin peaks: dragon quest vi, a game where you enter another world through dreaming or going to specific coordinates to enter holes. dopplegangers. waking up in bed holding a ring in your hand you found in the dream world. first main dragon quest after twin peaks the return: dragon quest xii: beyond dreams, where the main character dreams of himself as a lizard chet desmond (or the other way around). they had to restart development because after the return original 12 idea just wasn’t going to cut it anymore

Has anyone played Dragon Quest Monsters the dark prince? It was on sale for the Switch for $10 so I got it. DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince for Nintendo Switch - Nintendo Official Site
It feels very budget. Also I hate the animation they play whenever the prince wins a battle - he awkwardly overly animatedly crosses his arms and it looks so bad.
Besides that, seems cute so far, didn’t know it was a Tose game. I think I played the demo ages ago but barely remember anything about it. I like how fast everyone levels up - they seem to level after only a few battles.

yeah so I also just got this yesterday because of how cheap it was (and I wanted more DQ to play after completely finishing DQ2HD2D and its true last boss).
I agree with all these points, though i’m finding it charming enough, even with the animations. i’m still pretty early, I think? just beat the two earliest ranks of the battle arena, have met the Dark Prince’s Elf Wife, and I got all the monsters in the first region, except for the Cyclops because it killed everyone.
the only other DQM game I bought was the 3DS one that came out (Joker?) and I couldn’t really get into it, but this game is amusing enough so far and the leveling feels speedy so i’m not getting bogged down by the fact that it still feels a bit sluggish, storywise. i’m making my slime way too powerful which is probably a mistake.
anyway yeah, worth $10, I think. looks nicer in handheld mode, i’m finding.

I like the monster animations! It’s just the dark prince’s animations that bug me. The monsters are charming as heck, they’re funny little guys. The people animations on the other hand are pretty bland.
I wish I could skip or speed up battle animations though. I’ve been spoiled by Etrian that lets you speed up battles by holding A.
Who’s your favorite Monster so far? I’m a fan of the big chicken that butt stomps everything and also this guy (I named it Ivysaur bc my starter was a plant Slime that I named Bulbasaur):

also, something i completely forgot, it turns out, is basically all of Dragon Quest IV’s core plot lol
because apparently this game is a prequel to that? i really only remember that i loved the DS version of the game and it remains in my memory as my “favorite DQ game.” i remember the basic beats, and the way it’s divided up into different chapters.
kind of a shame i forgot all about our boy, Psaro, here. but hey, maybe once i beat this, that’ll be the incentive to finally revisit DQIV again.
kind of fucked up that the DS version came out in 2008! could have sworn it was like 10 or so years ago lol
is the PS1 version of the game translated into English, yet? that could be a fun way to replay it, i think.
anyway, as for this game, i’m now in the 3rd main region, and the game loops is starting to click. the mechanics behind how to scout monsters still feels a little esoteric, though, and based on things i can’t seem to predict accurately.
still, it’s fun when i only get like a 38% and the monster still decides to join me!
going to play some more when i’m home from work today and on the bus to physical therapy

I played this for about…20 hours or something? I’m a huge DQM fan, I’ve played all of them at least to some degree and finished the first two and at least the first joker.
It’s good? like it’s not mind blowing but I love the way that breeding is fairly technical (compared to Pokemon) and that your team will constantly be changing. This is true of all DQMs of course, but I’ll always love it. I think the story (that I played) was cute but nothing incredible.
but i love love love all the monsters. so many are only in the DQM series (to my knowledge) so it’s a happy place for me since i love those designs. they never ever get old. i just wanna see more monsters all the time.

She’s an enslaved elf whose tears turn into jewels, and you rescue her from a muscle pirate. Two seconds later she’s immediately like, “wow thank you so much I would do ANYTHING for you literally anything oh god plz let me do something for you cor blimey”
And the prince is like nah I’m good and teleports away, but then she hunts you down and finds your house, breaks in, and demands you accept her as your companion (for life). Incredible.
I don’t understand why she doesn’t just put a hood on or something to cover her ears. If she’s so afraid of humans catching her, cover those things. Meanwhile, how come no one gives a shit about the Dark Prince, who for all intents and purposes also looks like an elf? They just call him a handsome stranger. Does he have some magic on him that makes him look like an NPC to everyone else?
