Have we passed the era where this would almost definitely be some new iteration of dq1+2? Maybe even cresting out of the FTP gacha zone??? One can dream…
hmm
Realizing I had never made it very far in DW1 for the NES, I decided to try a blind playthrough with a notepad, and figured if I couldn’t figure something out I would bust out the Official Nintendo Power Dragon Warrior Strategy Guide as if I was playing it in January 1990 when I would have gotten a copy with my subscription of Nintendo Power.
I ended up not needing the guide and was able to figure out what I need to do entirely in game. The problem was that I had basically explored most of the world and gotten all of the the information I needed to beat the game around level 12. Having now defeated the Dragon Lord, I believe the earliest possible level to do so would be 18, when you get HEALMORE. I may be wrong about this, but I wasn’t able to keep up with healing until I got that spell.
This meant that after exhausting everything else to do I had to grind out 300+ battles to hit level 18. So while the grinding got extremely tiresome even at 3x fast forward (i ended up caving around level 14 and getting a 2x experience/gold romhack) I was very pleased with myself that I was able to beat it blind. I didn’t end up needing the guide at all! Though that’s too bad because it’s really gorgeous and fun!
The cover is original art as far as I can tell and is dope as hell:
On the other hand the inside cover is definitely Toriyama
I wonder how much of this comes from some Japanese document and how much was just written by someone at NP; pretty much all of the information could be extrapolated from in-game text but if it’s original whoever wrote it took the assignment very seriously and went hard
I liked this original art of some of the enemies, reminds me of doodles I would have made while bored in elementary school and daydreaming about dragon warrior:
Anyways, I might wind up trying the translated SFC version next to see how fast/efficiently I can beat it with my newly gained knowledge, or maybe I’ll give DW2 a shot.
play the gbc version for both they’re soooooooo cute
Thank you for the recommendation, I love the way this looks! The main character is such a chunky little boy, adorable
gosh, the days when Nintendo Power had Terada-san on call…what a luxury
The Link to the Past strategy guide is still probably like the single most beautiful piece of fantasy art ever produced
In other news,
fuckin god tier
praise him, and lift him up

Is anybody else doing the Dragon Quest Three Type Tryst or whatever? It’s running till the 31st. I rolled for it the other day and got Thief/Merchant/Warrior. I started off in DQ3 SNES, then switched over to GBC, then switched back to SNES. I was worried about the Merchant being weak, but it seems like with a decent personality it winds up being a decent enough attacker. In GBC, the Merchant was doing the most damage (with the Thief doing little to no damage). When I restarted in the SNES version, I wound up just giving the Merchant and Warrior the Amazon personalities and the Thief the Tomboy personality so they all do decent damage. I was able to get Sexy on my Thief in the GBC version, but not the SNES version, though, my SNES Thief with Tomboy out-damages GBC Sexy Thief by a lot, so whatever.

The protagonist is going to have to double as both the spell-caster and the healer, I guess. I don’t really like worrying about keeping dedicated spell-casters alive or having them taking up a slot when they aren’t really doing anything in battle except for minimal damage, so this roll kind of works out for me, I guess. I was hoping I’d get more money after battle from the Merchant but it’s mostly just been like, 2g every couple of battles.
I kind of don’t remember what I’m supposed to do after getting the Thief’s Key (I think I’m supposed to take it to an old guy in Keanu or something) so I’ve grinded a bit to level 7 without accomplishing much.

Wish they’d add a Discord bot or something so I didn’t need to deal with Twitter to do this stuff. I bet it’s easy to make one myself for Discord.
Playing through Dragon Quest II, baffled the entire time how people could hate it, and then got to the undersea volcano cave and (most especially) the cave heading to the final areas.
Been leaning on a guide a bit (would have never known or thought to use the false idol at a cave wall! Or that you can even walk out of the room full of damage tiles you get teleported to, for that matter), which probably has made this a more pleasant experience.
I dunno! I’m determined to finish it. It’s just…this goddamn cave full of dragons and pitfalls…damn.
I played the NES version years ago and I remember mostly enjoying it until the final few dungeons. The pitfalls are the worst!
re: my posts in the screenshots thread, i can’t stop laughing at the dqx deepl translations
