FUCK YEAH DRAGON QUEST (Part 1)

Would love an official port/remaster of the ps2 version of V.

7 on 3DS eliminates random battles, the world map is also sectioned off into little areas like 9. Better version, the only thing I didn’t like about it was they cut down the battle-less intro stretch from 4 hours to like 1 hour. But it’s great, check it out!

That’s how I felt about 11. It was fine but it also made me kinda anxious? It was too easy, the battles were too slow, it was this weird middle ground where every town/story sequence felt too long and the world exploration/dungeons felt too brief cuz I really wanted to avoid battling. Which sucks, I like to fight in these games. I quit not too long after you get the boat.

I started playing the 11 S demo cuz I wanted to try hard mode and then after putting like 10 hours into it I was reminded that the original version also had hard mode. But it didn’t have an option to increase the battle speed and the other tweaks and QOL improvements so it’s easily worse. Having your party visible on the map makes it feel way less like a lonely game!! All the issues I had with the game are now fixed, it has this real comforting pace to it, it’s just the perfect ā€œplay for an hour every night/maybe spend a weekend afternoon zoning out in the casinoā€ game now.

The girl school is my new favorite location in any of these games, a school devoted to teaching gals how to gracefully collect mini medals is maybe the dumbest, funniest concept in series history and I wish there was an entire spinoff based around it.

I think I got some real princess & the pea shit going on with Draqon Quest, it is a series I love but if an installment has an element that feels slightly off to me I just can’t get into it. Though I mostly chalk this up to localization issues – it’s fucking weird how there are 3 different English versions of DQ5, right? Or…4 if you count how the PS2 version has two different patches by the same team. And I’ve played them all a fair amount cuz I guess I’m more like Goldilocks than that princess, I’d say the PS2 one is the one I thought was ā€˜just right’, but I never finished it cuz it’s very easy to just drop these games cuz of the episodic nature, and also cuz I’d played through the first X hours so many times that I was fuckin’ sick of it…!

I played 8 using HDLoader and it was fine. I would have thrown it in the trash if I had to play it off a disc though.

I liked 9 a lot, it was a really good sick-in-bed game. When Nintendo was doing that treasure map promotion I actually went to two Gamestops to download them but they had no clue what I was talking about. That was embarrassing, I can’t believe I wanted treasure so badly that I went to a Gamestop.

The 2D mode has random battles. And the battle system is totally different, since it’s like the old games and you have to choose all your party’s moves at the beginning of a turn. And I think there are other balance tweaks? It’s amazing how they made 3 versions of this game that all came out at the same time.

I can’t play 2D mode though, the font is unobjectionable but still not good. I’m sorry!! Also I have a much harder time following the combat for whatever reason.

i got 100 percent cheevos on dragon quest 11 in 2019 and here’s what i remember about the story:

dragon quest 11

veronica child
funny italian accents
nun cant stop dancing
grandpa loves porn
its time to fix time
gay parade
monster school for fancy girls
gay outfit that makes you gay parade constantly
tiny ants crawling on everything to fix time
horrible protag hair
would you like the best weapon in the game or a haircut

i do remember the fucking bad ass arena with weird fight rules giving me a harder time than anything in the game and i loved it, and hating crafting at first but then getting the swing of it and gettjng all those plus threes

the reason i play dragon quest is because their monster animations always look like they should be on the next console, the story is forgettable candy like physical and others said

i need to actually play another dragon quest beyond the quiz in three but they’re so long and its a lot of candy i only have five teeth left i dunno if i can handle that much candy. trad candy too

i dont care about blood family or royalty or getting married and these are a lot of dumb themes in dragon quest

also, like ill say every time FUCK THE CHEESY MUSIC NOT CHANGING FOR 30 YEARS AND FUCK 11 NOT LETTING ME LISTEN TO SPOTIFY ON MY PS4 INSTEAD OF THE WARCRIME DENIAL MUSIC. its just fucking cruel

while most of the little contained stories in xi are snack-like i actually think the big swings are about as good as they get in anything

definitely stealing this line when i talk to normies

i think i felt that at the time but i literally dont remember anything except like, the three big chapter ending plot points

honestly i think my favorite thing about dragon quest 11 is watching arguements over the ending. so many people are like IT MAKES ALL YOUR PROGRESS MEANINGLESS. EVERYTHING YOU DID NEVER HAPPENED. except the point of the story is it actually did happen, your soft emotions brain retains all impactful events. plus you got the cheevos you cant deny the cheevos. talking about it just makes me wanna play shadowbringers again and erase that past. THAT shit made me cry. maybe its hard for me to be emotionally affected by events when fucking oompa clown music is playing in dq11 though

it was definitely my game of the year that year, kinda wanna play it again

I’m shocked by how enjoyable replaying it has been. I’ve never felt antsy or like I was wasting my time and that almost never happens with me.

OT reminder that 6 is one of the better ones, has weird monster designs, garish colours, and lots of side caves with good treasure

and yet it is pretty widely the most hated on (i like it pretty well too)

Lost in the cracks of localisation and a late western release on 3DS :confounded:

Play it on your Android for the price of a Subway sandwich

Everything I’ve heard just says it is ā€œstrictly worse VIIā€ so it’s hard to get excited when I’d much rather play VII

I always loved 6 and post about it because it was one of the first ones I played, but that is true. I guess I would say it’s very redundant rather than strictly worse

Holy shit the english ds version goes for a lot on ebay. I bought it at f.y.e. in like 2014 covered in a layer of dust

That was the word on the street for a while but isn’t really true. The narrative flow is very different, and I would say it’s most similar to 2, in that it’s about as sandbox-y as a DQ can get post-2.

2 and 6 play well consecutively.

As far as visual style and overall vibe, it’s a bit like Arabian Nights x Dragon Ball GT. The music is very good as well. And the story is a little darker. It definitely has it’s own identity that hasn’t been attempted since.

I just snapped up a (JP) copy of Dragon Quest IX for $7 on eBay so I guess I’m on the single player MMO theme this year

went back to find this post because i’ve been playing 1 and 3 and it’s so true. god i want to read a long book about the ā€œnumerical aestheticsā€ of those games. does anyone know of any good writing on this? i’ve only read this.

I remember explaining the appeal of Dragon Quest to someone who had never played it, whose primary JRPG experience was the Tales series, and I started talking about importance of small integers both for game balance and character growth and the beauty of its progression and they were like ā€œyeah sounds like a typical JRPGā€

and I’m like, no… you don’t get it until you’ve played it… DraQue is a feeling
