FUCK YEAH DRAGON QUEST (Part 1)

particularly grim in 3’s case because the sfc version was legit gorgeous

I first played DQ5 on DS and love how pretty it is so you can imagine my surprise when I saw the hack job they’d done to the mobile version

At least the sprites are mostly intact. The UI looks like a fucking flash game from 2004.

tim has been using that as bumper music for a while now

oh gosh the first thing they have you do in dragon quest switch after picking up where the demo leaves off is going to dragon quest 1 2D world and it’s gorgeous

fuck I have like six games on the go at the moment and there are several others coming out before the end of the year

Did they redo the soundtrack of Dragon Quest XI S, so it’s not the same soundtrack as the “regular” dragon quest xi? Am I understanding things correctly?

There’s the regular midi version but now there’s also an orchestral version. You can switch between the two in the options menu.

I picked it up.

The only minor downside is that switching between 2D and 3D restarts the current chapter, but you keep your levels and such, so this could probably be used for grinding.

While I didn’t mind the midi, the orchestral arrangements are nice.

I’ve only played like an hour so far.

i’m now convinced this is going to be re-released on ps4 now and i’m gonna be real mad cause i can’t get over how the switch version has more stuff but such a horrendous resolution (seriously the ps4 version looks so lush)

i don’t even think the 2D mode looks particularly good

I’m dealing with the knowledge that I now really want to spend hours and hours playing dragon quest for once in my life the way most people would with like a porn addiction

I really liked the 2D mode, but really I am more than happy to make the graphics trade off to be able to play portably, because it means to might actually finish it.

2D mode makes the game go by quicker too since you don’t have as much space to traverse, story scenes play quicker sans voice acting/animation, etc. I’m looking forward to replaying it but I’m going to hold off and finish the PS4 version first so it will probably be a while.

i guess the actual 2d art assets just don’t look particularly inspired to me. they do the job but i expect more from dragon quest! also it bugs me that the text is high-resolution when they could have used a nice dot font. I’m terribly picky, i know!

i think that’s fair enough considering how gorgeous the 1996 sfc remake of 3 is

i’m looking forward to revisiting the pc version in a few years with better hardware at 4k + the orchestral mod from the start, doubt the previous versions are going to get an update

I’m the last person to point this out but the way 11 handles respec’ing is extremely good

playing on tougher monsters + somewhat underleveled and I just went from being crushed into the ground by the sand crab boss to having a good tough fight just by changing the weapon I was using with erik

also shypox has caused me to lose progress multiple times now and I still can’t turn it off because I can’t get enough of the idea that my legendary propheiszed hero’s main weakness is that he constantly remembers minor social faux pas from years ago at key moments and becomes paralyzed by them

I like to think that the dragon quest team looked at all these new games coming out that are “about mental health” and were like oh yeah???

It’s a very-well-chosen amount of friction; just making you go back to camp and maybe work on a new weapon is far enough away that you chew on it in your mind during battles.

yeah, I like the extent they’ve managed to extrapolate dragon quest’s stereotypical jRPG progress curve into dozens of small hills to climb in different little thoughtful ways. I think that’s what a lot of these games think they’re doing but they don’t usually achieve that distinct cadence of “now how do I solve this slightly new problem”

the shops at the camp are so nice too! nothing is difficult that shouldn’t be difficult! it’s light years ahead of 8 and 9 imo
