FUCK YEAH DRAGON QUEST (Part 1)

i probably said this earlier in the thread, but i think dragon quest heroes is the only videogame where i’ve heard britsh accents that weren’t from london

yeah i’m crazy hype about it

i hope it’s 300 hours long (nobody tell me how long it is please)

so glad we have Dragon Quest to teach us that old people are scottish

also, now that Koichi Sugiyama is a known fuckhead, I can say that I find the Dragon Quest music extremely grating and in dire need of some kind of update. I know the comforting unchanging nature of Dragon Quest is a thing people care about, but at least with the visual design they have to make little modifications to keep up with advancing tech. The score just sounds stupid now and keeps getting worse the more “orchestral” they make it.

sugiyama is one of my biggest influences as a composer! around 8 and especially 9 there’s a noticeable decline in quality, but still plenty of good stuff. i still think the tunes for 1-7 are nearly unimpeachable, particularly in the symphonic suite iterations

the music in this trailer, though, is pretty bad and misses the point timbrally

ps sugiyama is and always has been a piece of shit

Fair–I don’t know anything about actual music tbh and have not listened to the symphonic versions of the earlier soundtracks. I just find everything I’ve heard from DQXI to kind of fall flat. It could just be because it is music written for something else that is being used out of context.

the super famicom games’ OSTs are the worst timbrally - here’s what they were working with for DQV:

compare this to sugiyama’s chiptune and old FM stuff* and it just doesn’t fly. even the NES soundtracks hold up better than these flattened, inexpressive blats. and that’s not even mentioning the symphonic suite versions, which are incomparably lovely:

bonus vintage sugiyama FM work:

This is all very true, except the sfc version of 6 has music that sounds like this (arranged/programmed by Hitoshi Sakimoto):

The voices probably sound weird to some because they’re not Actual British English Right Now but Actual Dragon Quest English. I loved DQ8’s dub. Especially Yangus. Just wished the protagonist wasn’t mute. DQ11 I’m not sure yet, need to see/hear more

I feel like the silent protagonist trope is terribly out of date now and shouldn’t be used. Except in fringe cases where it actually makes sense. Like if the game is actually built around a character that can’t or won’t speak, for Reasons

Man, if there is like a full costume system in this game and you can play DQ dress up, I am giddy.

the best part of dq9 was the way equipping armor changed your appearance and i now reject RPGs that don’t do this

It’s so wasteful to do it in 2D; Diablo could only ever go partway but it was something.

Unfortunately it’s getting harder to do in 3D as you can no longer do a quick texture swap but more and more is built by high-poly geo and unique materials.

Almost a month out. Must allot for the 60-80+ hours in September. Can’t use my slime controllers but they’ll be hanging around. Shrine of DQ assemble and activate.

For literal years now, I have been saying over and over again, what I want from New Graphics is not higher resolutions and more particles and better lighting and etc, that stuff is all good enough, but rather convincing materials interaction. No piece of clothing should ever clip through another piece ever again
