If you got the spare CPU cycles, this is pretty cool.

I would like to semi-hijack this thread for a somewhat related project, wherein you look up historical climate data from the logbooks of old whaling/trading vessels and transcribe them:
so hype
Wait, didn’t PS3s use to be able to do it this? Can they still?
Thanks for reminding me about these
(For a sortable list of active projects: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_distributed_computing_projects#Distributed_computing_projects )
You know this actually seems like something I could do with one of the spare computers I’ve got lying around. Just fire up a few distributed computing tasks and let 'er run
You can join many distributed computing projects easily by installing BOINC. Don’t overdo it, though. I burned a motherboard when I was leaving my computer running BOINC jobs every day
Sounds like just the kind of Viking burial a computer deserves
I just set FAH to run while the system is idle. My PC is on all the time anyway, so I figure those idle cycles might as well go to use because fuck cancer.
I actually checked to see if FAH actually does anything useful, and the answer I got from an oncology researcher was “Unequivocally, yes”. So I figure what the hell.
It does bring the temps on your CPU and GPU up a bit, though. I figure I’m going to need to replace both of these soon-ish anyway, so fuck it. Plus 80 isn’t THAT hot.
