DEMON’S SOULS BOOK CLUB: more like I ALREADY WROTE AN ARTICLE!
I will never play Demon’s Souls again I think. Do you remember the part in 3-4 with the this is a joke because I have never actually beat the game
I like any enemy in this game that is obnoxiously colored. I remember there being a Gold Skeleton on a Inconvenient Cliff. Hey developers: hire me to use words like that in your design docs.
I wonder what a design document looks like for these games now. Lines probably like "More teeth or bones here."
and “Please: Remember to use only memes the player likes.” I wonder if anyone has ever been shamed in office for the praise the sun gesture and I really hope they have.
This a great game and will probably test the stand of time. I would actually hate some kind of HD re-make that updated the graphics to look more like the newer souls games. Demons Souls needs absolutely 100% of its repeating textures and low poly models.
Does anyone (@meauxdal) want my copy (it still works without the online stuff, right?)? I played it a little bit when it from came out, it wasn’t for me but I’d be happy to send it to someone who wants it
Speaking of, I think Demon’s had the best script and the writing quality has slowly gone downhill from there. I think a lot of it comes down to quality of the English translator and because the Japanese devs can’t evaluate the quality of the result, it’s a random crapshoot whether a great or bad one gets chosen. Whoever translated Demon’s and DkS1 probably should be as famous as Ted Woolsey – I wonder if the Souls series would’ve struck the same spark in the US had the script been lackluster. As it is he/she isn’t even listed on these credits for example.
It is odd. Might have to wait several more years before any interviews can be conducted with the relevant people. One of the problems of modern game teams tending to be enormous and diffuse, and Japanese-centric efforts holding onto the general obscuring of its products’ craftspersons. I’m kind of surprised the Dark Souls and Bloodborne Design Works books even got those latter-end dev interviews.
The only place for credits you should trust is Mobygames. It’s right there.
Oh wait, do you mean the voice actor or the translator? Yeah, Miralda’s actor is missing, but for some reason I think that person did some other voices in the game as well and as such, is credited under a different character.
Broco meant the translators, and yeah, they are credited, although I personally was speaking to their obscurity in terms of the fact that like… literally no one talks about these people and apparently no one has tried to contact them for an article either. Or maybe they have and there’s been some weird legal shit.
In terms of post-production interviews I’d love most of all to get an exhaustive rundown from the level designers/concept artists, like what real life material were they looking at, what was the iterative process, what got scrapped, etc, but second to that would be a discussion with the translators
Also @bib and maybe @Mothra and @gary and I will be playing through some of Demon’s soon, maybe we can somehow figure out how to combine footage with audio recordings
you can actually see from translation credits though that the translators (under voice recorded dialogue at least), voice recorders and casting director have been consistent across projects.
besides, wasn’t all the Japanese games already in English, like RE games??
fuck, all this talk about the game… i guess i now know what my plans for christmas holidays are!!!
