I don’t really know how far I am in this (I’ve killed Kupka but haven’t fought Bahamut yet). I feel like I might be getting to the point where people report diminishing returns… Up until now the sidequests haven’t been too bad, and a few have been worthwhile thanks to fun lore or permanent upgrades. But I just went through a totally boring market checkpoint in the desert where the side quests were more plentiful and a lot duller than any previous location. I’m playing this game with my partner, which is fun, but she has a completionist streak and she’s making me do all the side quests, so I might be in trouble going forward.

I am just completely astonished at how boring Jill is. On paper, she should be a cool character, and they even gave her this badass moment where she assassinates a guy who used to keep her captive. But her face is, like, completely expressionless all throughout the game. I don’t get it, they animate Clive’s face surprisingly well, pretty consistently! You can read emotions on his face and understand how he feels even when he’s not saying anything! But Jill’s face always sports the look of an elementary schooler blankly sipping from a little single-serve milk carton. Her vibe is just always “oh, it’s milk again. ok.”

Also, why are 2/3rds of the side quests in this game about helping someone with their impostor syndrome? “I need to make a knife but I don’t think I’m good enough.” “I need to operate on someone for the first time and I don’t know if I’m ready!” “I’d like to be a baker but I don’t think I have it in me.” “Growing plants is hard and I’m not up to the task!” Are the people at Square-Enix ok?

Did Creative Business Unit 3 feel like they weren’t up for making a mainline single player Final Fantasy game? Is that supposed to be the subtext?

The ratio of interesting:dull sidequests gets more extreme as time goes on until the final wave right before the end.

I want to like Jill more but goddamn

I knew it from the first time I saw it.

This is Astro’s Playroom erasure!

(FWIW I had a base model PS4 and both the vastly improved loading times and making various PS4 games run markedly better has been a noticeable benefit, but yes actual games might be good at some point).

First generation I’ve bought zero consoles in and I miss absolutely nothing. I honestly forget they exist, as far as I can tell games still come out for PS4

Just got a character death spoiler from the ‘Who Is’ lore system - wasn’t expecting that given the attention that’s been lavished upon it.

Yeah i think if you view it too regularly they haven’t checked the exact order of information since the end of a cutscene can be seen in active time lore when activated at the start of said cutscene.

in this instance it was before the dungeon that leads to it. Not much of spoiler given at this point given they’re the only named non-allied character left

she’s great when she is actually involved in the plot but it feels like they forgot that she was a person for like 90% of the game.

My favorite character is Joshua’s pansexual she/they millennial retainer. We just sent her to our hideout to manage things. I can’t wait to get back and find that she’s spread the Woke Mind Virus across the base. I want to “Ask Blackthorn about pronouns”.

looks like you can now put clive and jill in costumes or something, and also there’s two paid dlc thingies coming

I cannot imagine what the DLC could possibly be other than Clive goes and does some more shit for people.

That or it’d have to explore a completely different period of history to be interesting.

I think the most interesting version of this would be like the 15 DLC where you have “episodes” centered on secondary characters you can play. I have no idea what they’ll actually do. It might just be three more side quests where you walk to a place and talk to a guy eight different times.

The Jill ‘Now with added Character’ DLC

I bloodpotioned this when I first read it and now that I am playing the big Final Fantasy I also agree with it. Shocked how it is in fact, still Final Fantasy.

Y’all collectively complained about the side-quests so I should ignore them?

you get useful stuff from some of them and some of them require other ones to be completed. you probably don’t need to do them, but i did all of them because i wanted my money’s worth

I’ve been doing all the quests because my gf wants me to. The plurality of them are dull, about 20% of them offer interesting worldbuilding or characterization, and 2 or 3 of them are legitimately compelling. Your mileage may vary.

The ones that give you actually useful rewards have a plus icon rather than an exclamation mark. Any time you see a plus sign, definitely do that quest. There are gameplay features hidden behind a few of those that you’re going to want (e.g. chocobo riding).

Strongly seconding this.

I left the vast majority of sidequests untouched because every time I did a bad one it really dragged down the whole experience for me (and if you don’t finish one, it just sits on your HUD the entire game). Unfortunately, there are also a handful of the sidequestst that I did do, that weren’t the “plus sign” sidequests, that really added some good depth to the story and world and were compelling in their own right. Too bad there’s not also a special icon for sidequests that are at least minorly interesting.
