FINAL FANTASY XVI

in fairness, the only interesting-to-good “mainline” final fantasy game in 15+ years was FFXV, and that was a total monsterpiece that spent years in development as several different other concepts; that’s just how square does things

The only real romantic relationship in this game is between Clive and Gav and that has even cooled significantly.

2nd most profitable, square’s real money maker is shitty f2p phone games

it’s their most profitable final fantasy game since 2021

Yeah I’m kinda skeptical the mobile market has been that great a driver for Square since the folks I know who play gachas never really mention those, and they die awfully fast.

I’m using square’s own reports as a source, most of those shitty little gacha games are way more popular in japan than america and they earn twice as much as mmos on a bad year

This is getting a Takarazuka adaptation and i have spent all day trying to figure out what that looks like. They’d have to actually give romance to Jill and Clive!

I think to stay true to the source material it should be Gav and Clive

this is the first FF where i haven’t osmosed the characters from others. in the same year as baldur’s gate and hearing no end of astarion and karlach, the guy who has to eat equipment, etc.

i wouldn’t expect to hear about Character Design from dragon quest but it’s a little odd there isn’t an emet selch breakout character at least

Good observation. I only know of

  1. Clive the main character, super hot
  2. Throwaway GF, I don’t know her name or what she looks like
  3. A carpenter you have to look for to repair an extremely small bridge to get to the next area, like in a 1988 RPG

I watched my friend play a whole dungeon and still don’t know any of the characters.

Well there is one voiced by the VVitch / Diablo 4 guy, that I remember, but I couldn’t pick him out of a lineup

There are several characters where you meet them and think “hey, this person seems interesting, I can’t wait to see where this goes” and then they just never get any development and stay totally bland and one-note for the rest of the game.

Mid is a nerdy young engineer girl who’s helping your crew out during her college winter break. That’s a great concept for a character! Goes nowhere. Mid!!!

That one flamboyantly dressed academic lady who’s obsessed with geopolitics and has a lot of intense opinions about various nations, she also seems like she’ll be a standout… But then she spends the whole game standing in one single room and exposition dumping you when you least want it.

Co-signing this.

Both those character introductions are played as reunion yet you as the player sit there going “who the hell is this? Why do I care?”

When will Microsoft try to buy square enix?

There’s a FFXIV / FFXVI crossover event going right now. Clive enters the world of FFXIV and the thing that makes him realize he’s in another world is… this one has airships! Carrying forward FFXVI’s prominent use of airships as a metonymy for classically fun and imaginative Final Fantasy worlds as opposed to FFXVI’s stuffy, grounded low fantasy.

Lol, I’ve been waiting for the PC release to revive this thread. I never did play the DLC… Even the sunk cost fallacy of nearly 100%ing the original (don’t ask me why) couldn’t bring me back.

Welcome to the thread PC Players all of us agree the game sucks.
