Had some fun at the FFXIV booth at Pax East this year:

Final Fantasy XIV booth shenanigans

Went up to a booth for the “Defeat the Ruby Weapon” event, asked the lady at the front about it. She was immediately like, “There is absolutely no way you can do this without a team of eight people, real experienced in the game.” Eventually I asked her if there was any kind of other FF stuff going on, she said no. Wandered around and find a “Beginners” section, which, oddly, was exactly what I was looking for.

You basically go into a line, and they bring you up to a set of 4 computers. A guy came out and is like, “okay we’re going to assemble teams of 4 from the line here,” I join a group of three others (one guy was like 60, all business, the other two were college-age jabrones).

“Alright who wants what class?”

Everyone is like, “Oh I’ll play whatever nobody else wants.”

Guy is like, “You can’t all not pick. Who’s picking what?”

“I don’t know.”

Me: “I’ll be healer, I’m pretty good at that.”

Guy: “Okay great, we got a healer.” Points to one of the jabrones “Want to be a tank? You don’t have to do anything, just stand there hitting 1.” points at the other two “DPS, spellcaster.”

We go into battle against Ifrit, party wipes three times, each time after a “pin” appears and the team fails to attack it. Our wizard at one point was just running against the wall, seemingly trying to escape the map. The targeting’s also pretty weird in this game, so, actually hitting the right pixel to target the pin was a bit obnoxious. I know because I’d take some time out of healing to throw some stone II attacks every now and then, hoping I could cover for the other spellcaster.

Older fella next to me leans over at one point and is like, “I have no fucking idea what I’m doing.” Which we both laughed about.

The booth guy eventually loomed over the tank and dps, telling them which numbers to hit and when for a while, “Alright guys FOURTH TIME’S A CHARM! I KNOW you can DO THIS!!”

(We did manage to kill it on the fourth go-around.)

Was pretty fun, altogether. I remember people saying the boss fights were really the part of this game that was genuinely engaging, and I can see the potential there.

They gave me a code for free month of the latest expansion.

There was also this “Beat the Ruby Weapon” booth, where if your team could defeat this super-difficult specialty boss, you would get this shirt (I did not earn one myself obvs):

haha the nails get everyone their first try i love this!

i have beat ruby weapon but i dunno if i could do it in a pax booth without my own button setup

did you get to pick which weapon you held for the picture

Yeah, I came very close to holding the gunblade they had, but, I couldn’t resist the massive buster sword thing.

My friend Wally is a personal trainer, is in basically perfect shape, and was pretty much dual-wielding the giant sword and the gunblade, which was a riot.
