favourite films of the 2010s

i deleted my original post, but isiah medina’s 88:88 is the only one whose place i feel entirely confident about. give me another decade to catch up and i’ll know for sure.

also blackhat #blackhat

Yeah, some solid fights in that. The actors clearly committed to the vision. The movie is also helped that Gina Carano is a real life radass killer.

Carano and Soderbergh are a perfect marriage. So good

It Follows does the suburban fear of Detroit thing very well, probably subconsciously and unintentionally. I dated someone who lived right next to that ice cream place around the time it came out, and I go to that theater pretty regularly, so I get an extra kick out of that. I hear there’s still a bunch of fake rubble inside of the Packard plant from filming the chair scene in there.

I saw you were never really here a few days ago and boy has that movie fucked me up

the one thing i do like about it follows is its suburban michigan autumn atmosphere

i can’t dig it as a horror movie tho–i wanted something much scarier!

the opening scenes are real good, in fairness

Right! I don’t think I’d dig it nearly as much otherwise (soundtrack and that clam shell pda aside). I just skipped a screening at said theater to instead get talked at about weird made up sex antics, for whatever that’s worth.

my twitter is going crazy about this mostly on the basis of it being, like, a regular-ass midbudget film with decent action scenes and creative direction and actual subtext, the kind of thing that almost never happens anymore

james gray movies are slightly quieter and slower and thoughtfuler than regular-ass movies

yeah I should’ve said that it’s like, closer to the idea of what a mainstream movie should be than actual mainstream movies are

denis velleneuve movies always seem like they’d be pretty good if he had some obsessions other than moms

as I was watching it I thought, how nice that there’s a beautiful mainstream sci-fi action movie for grown ups. the 14 year old yeeter down the row from me was audibly perplexed

Still wish someone would do a space exploration movie that isn’t about dads
