Fatigued Souls (Part 1)

nothing anyone says about a souls game’s difficulty is ever true for anyone but themselves

idk i tried to say some pretty thoughtful stuff about the difficulty and it seemed right to me

You’d only wanna do that if it raised your offensive or evasive capabilities. Damage reduction for a ranged character is very low priority.

Or I guess if you like the look of armor but it’s worse than other armor and the upgrades make u feel better about the ifferences.

I usually don’t commit to upgrading a set of armor until i’m sure it’s gonna be my main set for the rest of the game. You do notice a difference but only when your armor is at an especially high level

If it helps though, armor upgrades cost less titanite than weapon upgrades and getting to +3 isn’t a huge waste in the long run. The basic form of titanite becomes pretty common by the mid game so don’t feel too bad about spending it (the titanite chunks and slabs are the ones you want to use frugally)

For anyone who doesn’t follow L on twitter, he’s been playing through the first game for the first time, and his livetweets on it are typically thoughtful and entertaining

you’ll get plenty more souls and regular titanite as you progress so don’t sweat it. it’ll give you a little defensive boost for now and that ain’t bad. upgrading weapons might be more beneficial but i wouldn’t worry too much. later on, though, you may want to preserve scarcer resources for pieces you especially like and which fit your set within a certain weight limit, etc.

that first post isn’t terribly promising unless it’s a joke?

“oh no, numbers go up in an rpg?!”

I can never tell where L is coming from exactly with posts like this, since they seem to be produced through an unknown quantity of double, triple, and quadruple negative/irony/sarcasm filters.

Makes good games and has good game design insight, though.

They stopped letting you upgrade your armour after DkS1, right?
I remember it having the interesting effect of that since regular armour could be upgraded to +10 while the more fancy stuff like the stuff worn by bosses, black knights and stuff only went to +5, a lot of regular armour would end up with higher numbers when maxed out. This meant that for top level PvP builds where you’re min-maxing to the fullest there could be some pretty weird mixes of regular chainmail and the pants of a legendary demi-god.

Seemingly sincere!

He’ll likely find out the most optimal of all is avoiding most enemies :open_mouth:

i took it as at least tongue in cheek. He’s generally pretty positive on the game

iirc armor is worth upgrading to whatever highest level you can get with common materials but probably not for going much higher? if you rely on shields a lot they can be worth maxing out as extra stability is really helpful.

there are a couple exceptions tho? the dingy robe in particular gets really high elemental defense when upgraded and weighs next to nothing.

but yeah, weapons first, stats next, shield if you block a lot, then armor if you have cheaper materials to burn

I don’t think I ever leveled up a piece of armor in DkS even one time. Never occurred to me. Operating on DeS brain I guess

I beat Pinwheel and the Capra Demon last night. I’m getting up to where I got stuck the first time I played, but I have way more cool shit, and I’m takinh much less damaged from everything thanks to actually leveling up endurance and wearing the stone boy armor. I’m not looking forward to cursetown so if anyone has tips I’d love to hear them.

Also using a big stupid scythe now, might fuck around and try to kill a big dog with it.

Oh also I killed the last necromancer, who I guess I missed last time, that was so satisfying

You mean Blighttown? or the Depths?

…that’s an inscrutable question. The Depths is normally before Blighttown and there are a few rare enemies that can Curse you that look like big freaky frogs, can’t miss em. Don’t miss em. Blighttown has ranged enemies that can Toxic you. For either one of those, you’re gonna want to talk to the hollow lady who lives in the aquifer near the Undead Burg. She sells purple moss that cures poison, blooming purple moss that cures toxin, and a few purging stones which cure curse. Stock up on the former but don’t bother with the stones unless you get cursed, which is less likely than people talk it up

Boy i love Fromsoft games. Where’s the Evergrace thread??

oh i was thinking of the place with the shitty ghosts, actually. just now remembering that it’s not cursetown, it’s “you have to buy this fucking ghost item or something” town.

i just remember having to use a consumable to be able to hit the ghosts at all, and then if you die you have to buy another one? it was very frustrating at the time, although now that i know you can do easy grinding for souls in the darkroot basin it’s not as big of a deal. anyway, the depths is intimidating but not nearly as bad as it seems, and blighttown is…a lot, but doable. it’s the ghost fuckers who i hated.

i think i do want to fight sif because i want to beat that boss before breaking the covenant of the forest assholes to grind.

I am sure commonly known at this point but finding out this is a real armor that existed is a treat.

Aye, siwae

Hmm, you said you just beat capra? You don’t have to go to ghost town just yet, and in fact you won’t be able to complete it before you get the Lordvessel (though you do also have to beat Sif before you can fight the boss of ghost town).

You want lots of poise to fight the ghosts, otherwise they quickly stun lock you to death. The ghosts drop those transient curse items that you need to fight them. If you increase your item find a little by having at least 1 point of humanity/wearing equipment, the drop is pretty common. They also drop weapons that can hurt them without using an item. And, uhh, you can hurt them if you have been cursed, but i wouldn’t recommend that.
