Fatigued Souls (Part 1)

Is it worth it to get DS Remastered on Switch?

I’ve been really craving Dark Souls again. I own it on PC but don’t feel like hooking up a controller, and I own it on PS3 but have no way to comfortably hook the console up. I like the idea of playing it on a handheld while bundled up cozy in my blanket. I’m just not a fan of the price tag.

yeah it might be my favourite way to play it, controller aside

it looks like a cleaned up version of the ps3 version, with a good framerate, rather than the full ps4 remaster

Does it run at 60?

I would be satisfied with 30 as long as it doesnt dip to hell in Fight Town

i think it’s 30, but holds that in blighttown.

I’m playing Dark Souls, this time Remastered. Dark Souls is the game I’ve played 40+ hours of and never finished, but this time I’m not going to finish it either probably. BUT! I’m a lot less annoyed or afraid of using my resources, and I finally got a decent handle on parrying which has unlocked a lot of fights. I’m also not hesitating to use the wiki to get to stuff I haven’t seen before, such as ā€œthe forest boys who do murders at youā€ and ā€œthe mushroom folks who do murders at youā€ and ā€œthe big dog,ā€

This cavalier attitude has actually made the game much more pleasant. I’m looking forward to hitting a roadblock and eventually quitting.

But god damn does this game go places, and the Undead Burg is like, the finest second level in all of video games IMO.

i got no ps3, get outta here

Oh also, the online functionality actually works in the remastered version so it’s been a lot of fun just seeing ghosts wandering around and getting stupid notes and stuff. I even did an Invasion of some grave-y person, they immediately murdered me.

based on what my first impression of dark souls was like, it’s still faintly disappointing to me that we ultimately talk about the games in terms of ā€œlevelsā€

it’s not wrong… just, i could feel it gesturing toward something so much more holistic and integrated

oh yeah one of the things i’m most impressed about with Dark Souls is how, after blasting through the undead burg, the rest of the game is just…a bunch of stuff. At least, that’s how it seems to me

Like, Undead Burg is the last clearly delineated ā€œlevelā€ I’ve seen in the game. That said, I have not gotten much farther than, uh, blight town and/or valley of the drakes or something, i can’t remember.

But it feels like the Undead Burg is this tight, perfect little area, but then OOPS it turns out there’s like, an underground fucking forest or something, and then there’s MORE underground forest but this time with dudes who wanna kick your ass and weird mushroom people, and somehow it connects to other places and and and

It’s remarkable. I really like this game.

DS3 for me the now.

I’ve been coming around to it more and more, now that enough time has passed and it can step out from behind the shadow of yharnam.

Ahem.

Love and respect the Demon’s Souls style rebalancing and references.

! CRABS !

I’m definitely having a better time with DS3 than I expected to given its reputation. The multiplayer is great, I’m loving all these weird covenants that actually work.

there was a lot of burnout on it when it came out afaik so the tone wasn’t super enthusiastic but i’d happily go on record saying ds3 is totally great

it’s pretty good once you accept that it’s Dark Souls: For Super Players

You don’t even struggle that much if you play as a pyro (and sorc?) especially if you are willing to summon NPCs (or players obviously) against bosses. I haven’t finished the ringed city yet but the painted world boss went down on my third try even as I played super sloppily

My time replaying this made me dislike Sekiro’s rigidity even more

i have sorta half-assed thoughts about what 3 says about the series through its plot, it feels like it’s made to be meta commentary… you are a failed Souls player and your goal is to beat the top 5 Souls players of all time and climb to the top of the leaderboard (which is also your hub level)… every element feels cannibalized from previous games in the series even before you meet Aldrich, who is being very literal about it… in the endings you either link the fire, and see how much the returns have diminished, or you put it out and are told that one day, a new fire will arise (COUGH SEKIRO COUGH ELDEN RING COUGH COUGH PLEASE LET US MAKE ANOTHER GAME SERIES NOW)
