I had to change a headlight today. I’ve changed a rear breaklight countless times so I thought it would be easy. It was not. When I had changed brakelights, I could access the unit from the trunk: simple, clean. To change this headlight, I would need to peel back the mudflap and squeeze my hand inside.

It’s been snowing and freezing for the past two weeks. The bottom of my car is coated with salty slush. The simplest part of plucking off a few tabs was unpleasant enough but then I had to lie on the floor of a public garage to unscrew more connectors. My screwdriver wasn’t turning them. I almost gave up…but then I thought, what would Judas Priest do? I put on the best album of 2024 and rolled up my sleeves. I found a socket wrench that I had saved from an IKEA set and went to town. Friends, I peeled back that mudflap, squeezed my hand in, and changed the bulb. I did it all and I even avoided having the halogen lamp explode in my face.

Every commercially available automobile has at least one bizarrely located component

My Volvo’s timing belt is behind the front passenger wheel well, you have to take off the wheel and the brake assembly to get to it. It’s low enough that it gets wet when I run through deepish puddles and it squeals like a bastard

I helped a coworker change a bulb in his Scion XD  in the parking lot at work years ago. I was surprised at how much shit we had to move out of the way (including the battery (unless I’m remembering a Kia SUV instead)) to get to the bulb. And it had some kind of weird condom thing that slipped over it that made the job 10x more annoying.

May i invite you to join the Citroën Owners Club for Unbelievable Efforts For Changing a minor Lightbulb (not the Xenon main bulb, mind you), i.e. the parking light?

Costs of bulb… 1-2 bucks.

Wanna have a guess what the Workshop Bill was (there’s a reason why i avoided DIY)?

They had to loosen some screws and remove parts of the front fascia just to get to the screws that let them pull out the headlight, open it, insert new lightbulb, assemble it again, bolt on the front fascia and voilá, that’s 200+ bucks gone for a simple tiny bulb … needless to say i made them change every bulb aside from the xenon one, because that would have set me back somewhat south of 1k? for both sides.

I’ve been ignoring the idea of the driving videogame this year. I guess I could do my own research, but I have sporadically wondered:

  • what the map layout of this new TXR game is?
  • I’m assuming it is constrained solely to the Shuto and has no new geography over the previous TXR/Wangan Midnight games?
  • Also, further, is the actual geometry of those roads exactly the same?

As far as I can tell: yes, yes, and yes.

I knew what to do in certain blind turns my first time through them.

The install size was 6.7GB

This is like what if GRP made a new TXR for PS3 and release it in 2025.
