i played silent hill 1-3 for the first time this year and really enjoyed slowly and methodically mapping everything
it’s a nice change from running in the direction of a glowing quest marker

definitely possible, but to do it without any grinding or any foreknowledge involves some luck because it’s not the most balanced game in the world. you can make parties that kind of suck. you can make parties that have definite strengths, but strengths that kind of go against the flow of some of the five or so bottleneck battles, which is where most of the difficulty in the game is.

FFT will always be challenging until you get Orlandeau but there’s one weird trick to make it a lot less painful and annoying
White magic shenanigans are responsible for most of the annoying deaths in this game. White mages are very unreliable because 1) Magic can fail 2) magic has a charge time. Rely on chemists instead, they’re the secret best class and they’re immediately available
I’ll be honest though FFT can throw annoying situations that can screw you over if you made wrong choices; there’s one Ramza solo battle in particular in the mid-game that will seem impossible if you built Ramza as like, a thief / knight?
On the other hand back in the day someone beat the game with only Ramza as a mathematics-less calculator so maybe I just suck

Shit I’m late!! But I have to justify so here goes:

It’s Rez for me. I’ve never got into the groove enough with FFVI, probably because I played Chrono Trigger first. Rez is a unique experience and any game which manages that is solid.

Mirror’s Edge makes me a bit queasy so I never got into it, even if I wanted to justify buying it in HMV for £2. Link’s Awakening for me, even with its stuffy UI.

I’ve played both 3D Land and Sky Odyssey for approximately 5 minutes each, so I can’t judge. Abstain.

Outrun forever. Splash Wave is top ten game tracks, just behind Last Wave.

I have not played Baba is You, so Bubble Bobble with its one piece of music is the winner, I guess.

I voted for AKI Wrestling Game because No Mercy was a bag of fun, but I ain’t mad if Umihara Kawase wins. I’ve never got into it but Lick Meth played the shit out of it so that’s a thumbs up for me.

Like a scrub I’ve not played Yume Nikki and I will rectify this at some point. Gunstar Heroes is increible though, and even better in co-op, which is always the basis for my approvals.

Everything I’ve ever read about DOTA 2 involves toxicity so that’s always put me off. Elevator Action Returns is extremely cool. Clear winner.

I have never liked Rez. I remember reading the fuckin’ GIA pre-release and they had up all this bullshit about how it’s A Game Where You Make Music As You Shoot and that’s bullshit, it’s just a bunch of pings and pongs. Yes I’m saying “heck-no techno” over here. You can’t stop me. It’s very pretty and daring but it’s too long and too easy and boring for most of it. Sorry, I was straight edge when this came out, and I’d already seen the Mind’s Eye, which is cooler, and available at a lower price from a shop cooler than any game store (The Sharper Image)
Final Fantasy VI is a great game and I have zero interest in ever talking about it ever again. It’s probably the only FF I could recommend without a ton of caveats.
Mirror’s Edge shouldn’t have had guns, or those fuckin’ Erin Esurance looking cutscenes. It’s the Dolph Ziggler of big budget console games. Do you know what I mean by that? Probably not. It’s just a good game from a big publisher during a time when such things were rare. It’s like 5 hours long and I had to force myself to finish it. I would probably have a much higher opinion of it had I only played the time trials. Those seemed neat enough.
I think Link’s Awakening is the first game that let me help a bunch of weirdoes solve their stupid problems, and I think I established in the other thread that that’s My Thing. I bought Moon 3 weeks ago and I guess I stopped playing it 2 weeks ago. It’s a game about helping weirdoes but I think the writing isn’t all that great. I don’t want to help any of the people I’ve met so far. Shit, I’m not even sure what any of their problems are. Maybe they don’t have any. Maybe I’m being presumptuous in thinking it’s my job to solve them. Anyway Link’s Awakening’s characters are way more likable and interesting even though they use way less words and I’m pretty sure none of those words are ‘heck’.
I actually don’t like Sky Odyssey. I never got far into it cuz it is hard to fly that fucking plane. I am sure it’s rewarding once you get a handle on it but I have no interest in doing that cuz this shit looks like you’re flying over a Turok map. The music is great but it’s awfully dramatic for a game all about flying through rings. Maybe it would have been good if it was on Dreamcast. DC games tend to have nice colors.
Mario 3D Land is one of the few games from the last decade I have incredibly fond memories of. There have been quite a few games I liked! But I don’t remember them. I’ve replayed it a few times, which is rare for me. And it’s got colors other than muted browns, greens, blues, and bright yellow. It wins, for me.
I remember buying Final Fantastic Tactics and saying “Oh shit, I forgot, I hate games like this” as soon as I booted it up. But that wasn’t true. I loved X-COM. And eventually I had fun with FFT, until I got stuck at that fucking castle against that old man in the brown armor. I only had one save. All the advice on the internet told me I pretty much had to start over. I refused to do that, as I valued my time much more when I was younger than I do now. I had a similar experience with Vagrant Story. I think this is a Matsuno problem. It is not a me problem. That dude makes games for people who looked forward to doing homework.
I’ve tried going back to it with every re-release and every time I go “holy shit this is the slowest game ever made, how can anyone tolerate watching all these animations” and quit. I’m sure I’ll actually play through Felix’s version though. Yes, I started it a few weeks ago and quit immediately after the opening mission cuz it took each one of these little dumpling people a full minute to, like, throw a fucking rock at someone. But eventually I’ll have a computer that can fast forward PSX games real good. Then I’ll finally be able to enjoy Final Fantasy Tactics.
Anyway I’m voting for FFT anyway cuz even after all this time I want to like it way more than I do and also there’s a much better Outrun game on this list and I can’t cast a write-in vote for Space Harrier. Can’t believe we had three dozen people complaining about picks yet no one said “Why are there two virtually identical games about driving a car to impress a girl, except one’s way worse than the other.”
Baba Is You is the ultimate game for people who love doing their homework and I mean that as a compliment this time. I think it’s magnificent. But it’s not a game about fat dinosaurs who blow bubbles and eat fruit. It’s so fucked up that the sequels have you playing as these fat kids with bowl cuts. Why would you want to go back to being some roly poly dweeb with an umbrella when you could be a dinosaur that lives forever.

I’m happy to be part of a community that loves Outrun that much, I wish more games were all about impressing girls, I get plenty of that in my day to day life but doing it in digital is fun too

Have you played Skate or Die 2? If you do particularly well in the ramp mode that’s separate from the story, you impress a girl who has apparently been watching through her window the whole time.
Also, I would not be surprised if someone were to one day make a game that resembles The Mind’s Eye. And I will purchase that game. (But I really like Rez, too.)

This is probably the hardest one, but given that I think I like FFIV a tiny bit more than VI, I’ll go with Rez for this one. I used to be able to get through that final boss fight without getting hit, and I’m pretty bad at video games so it’s doing something right (or wrong).

Super Mario 3D Land vs Sky Odyssey
I don’t know if I even know what Sky Odyssey is and I had no concept of Mario 3D Land until that recent Direct, and even then I’m not sure which one is World and which is Land. I was leaving this one blank but I just accidentally clicked on Mario and I can’t figure out how to undo that so I guess that’s where I’m at.
Outrun vs FFT
Tactics was my favorite RPG of the PS1 years by far. Outrun has always been second banana to the wonderful Space Harrier for me.
Bubble Bobble Vs Baba is You
Baba sounds like work, and is probably backed by the people who push for STEM education. Bubble is one of the greatest games of all time.
Umihara Kawase vs the US N64 Virtual Pro series
Gotta go with AKI. Revenge is the best time I had on the N64 outside of PD. I get the grappling hook game confused with the boob ninja games so I just steer clear of both
Gunstar Heroes Vs Yume Nikki
I can’t remember what the latter is—I think it’s one of those instant death horror RPG Maker games. I do know that Gunstar is my favorite Genesis game though.
Disco Elysium vs Silent Hill 2
Is that New Vegas 2? Or is that some kind of Dwarf Fortress-y nerd thing? I have no idea. SH2 all the way

Quake 1 has such a special place in my heart though, that it eclipses even Doom.
I like that my 10 minute run the other day let me follow the first investigation pretty straightforwardly, letting me interview the bartender/“cafeteria manager” at the start then when we found tracks on the ground near the tree showing the guy was hanged by a group of people you could pick a dialogue option letting your character’s misanthropic feelings force him to just give up, then lol game over.

the best thing about mirrors edge is how when tim langdell was suing the world for saying edge EA was like ‘oh actually we can afford lawyers’ and kicked his ass in court, forcing him into a corner where he had to prove his haphazard photoshops as real. one of my favorite court transcripts to read

the code for level 57 is FEJJJ. everyone knows this one because IT’S THE LEVEL WITH SPIDERS SHOOTING LAZERS DOWN AT YOU WHILE YOU HAVE TO BUBBLE JUMP UP TO GET THEM. IT SUCKS. ive only beat it with powerups that get rid of the level

i voted for rhythm tengoku as my music game of choice. i love ouendan and elite beat agents but the songs are fucking HORRIBLE (especially in elite beat, but ouendan is all platinum pop too). I’ve put so many hours into it but id feel dirty voting for those songs
