reupping this thread to ask about office chairs. my current goodwill one is really screwing with my mid/upper back and the amazon lumbar support I bought keeps slipping

how does one acquire Good Chair for Fair Price

craigslist. or like, on the street. I know I tend to overuse ā€œjust find it secondhand locallyā€ as a solution for consumer purchases but this is in like the 99th percentile of those

buy a $400 Ikea GRƖNFJƄLL/JƄRVFJƄLLET chair or look at FB marketplace for a $400 Herman Miller Aeron/Embody or Steelcase Leap/Gesture

yes, a few years ago I got my steelcase gesture through a local secondhard liquidator of office equipment. it’s a good chair.

saw a neat looking office chair on the side of the road on my way out of the house a while ago, got my partner to grab it for me before someone else did hoping it’d be an upgrade from the jƤrvfjƤllet a friend gave me a while ago. turned out to be an ikea gaming chair. but maybe it’ll be nice on my lumbar once i find a screw to keep the headrest together

if you can find the part number for the screw from the instructions, IKEA will send you a new one

I got a Steelcase Gesture from Costco Japan and it was by far an extremely expensive purchase but since we basically like a car I’d say it has paid for itself.

i needed a new chair and didn’t want the same one i work in (Aeron) so i got a Knoll Generation from a liquidator for $175. i think it’s a lot more home-appropriate. The look is less corporate and it tolerates lots of weird positions. The interior curve of the arms follows the lumbar support and the top rolls so you can sit sideways and lean over the back, which probably sounds horrifying to someone but it’s where i end up a lot of the time. Generous recline. The downside of flexibility is that it’s less adjustable & supportive. There’s a ton of plastic on this thing but no creaks on mine despite a 2014 manufacture date. It’s less popular, consistently ~65% the price of the Aeron and comes in cool colors if you hunt a little.
