I can’t think of the last boss fight that I didn’t wind up winning with my reserve team which you’d think would feel cheapening but doesn’t, I love that you get the option to swap them in once you eat it
that’s funny, i’ve basically ignored my reserve and have exclusively won with the front line. sorry monoco / sciel but u guys suck (ok sciel is fine but being hard damage-typed means she is sometimes/unpredictably completely useless)
I always play RPGS by trying to build every single character while basically speedrunning the game so I am grateful that it supports my doing this
Got a good strat ready for a boss after memorizing attacks and careful planning with pictos and equipping the right weapons only to one shot it on my next attempt ![]()
Sciel is like easily the best party member after Maelle imo, she can’t do a ton of damage on turn 1 because she needs to set up Twilight/Foretell (much like putting Maelle into Virtuose) but if you build her right she just destroys everything after that
Lune’s high level skills all kind of suck so she falls off unless you do disgusting meta strategies, Verso is not powerful enough to merit how fiddly he is, and Monoco is great but his AP economy sucks until the late game and you have to have been using him constantly until then to get enough skills so he’s very caveated
Really underrating both monoco and sciel, here. Sciel is the best support character and can provide the essential service of giving maelle more turns
Monoco as the game’s blue mage sucks for the first couple hours but once you get some of the nicer skills he becomes a beast. One of his skills does increasing damage with every use, so if you can max out monoco turns (ie with sciel and the cheater picto), you can be doing millions of points of damage in no time. He was my backup damage dealer until maelle became totally unstoppable in the end game
Verso was my most useless party member, he just couldn’t keep up with the others
Maelle > Sciel > Monoco > Lune/Verso imo
it actually rules that their blue mage doesn’t suck for once
Lune is great through the mid game if you build her around spamming tempest mayhem every turn (that one weapon that gives you a free stain for every aimed shot means she can always be at peak damage output) but yeah she becomes basically irrelevant by the end game since there’s nowhere to go with her once the tempest mayhem build starts to struggle
do you mean mayhem because that’s exactly what I did
Yeah woops
all of Verso’s high level skills are theoretically cool but really annoying:
- can stunlock a broken enemy, ok cool but how often was I at A rank with 9 AP exactly when I was ready to break an enemy
- can do knights of the round 13 hit shit but only if I’m already at S rank and able to take zero damage for a whole turn, great I’ll make sure not to fuck that up
- can do ascending damage by spamming the same low-cost ability at S rank — great, how long is this battle again and how much damage have maelle/sciel/monoco already done up to this point
the most useful he ever was for me by far was with the “never drop below C rank” weapon with the “do more damage for how low your health is” berserk rush or w/e, that was consistently doing 30k for most of the latter part of Act 2 if he was below 70% HP, but even that was just dull
Verso exists purely for solo no damage parry everything challenge runs to satisfy the game director’s perverse tastes
So I can’t hate him but he is worthless if you play the game like a normal person
verso is busted to hell in act 2 because he gets that one weapon that functionally gives him cheater early. it’s almost trivial for him to just have 9ap every turn. you can just steamroll everything with that massive breaking light damage to all enemies move over and over. and you’re getting so many hits that you can just ignore his whole rank mechanic really, you’re almost always up to A on his first turn and S when he comes back around if the battle lasts that long, so who cares
but yeah he falls in line once everyone has cheater
once i’d gotten through maybe 20% of the act 3 shit i was just having monoco use that one weapon that lets him shoot to fish for the mask he needs, and two of the mask types would let him do 2-3 million damage with 8/9ap on his cheater turn. so he could kill everything except maybe a couple of the most emerald weapon guys inside of two or three rounds. never even tried that skill that does more damage with each use!
which is all one of the reasons i don’t really think much of the game— i like lego stacking skill shit as much as the next pervert, and i think there’s a patch in the mid game when you’re trying to find ways to push against your limits and it works sort of well, but it doesn’t last long before the game is all but winking at you while you trip over dozens of “game-breaking” combos that you can barely avoid if you’re keeping your eyes open
this doesn’t seem like a flaw to me, or at least I would like it if many more games would have this flaw instead of the usual (a million trap options and 2 ways to actually play well)
Character building is the only avenue for self expression in most digital rpgs. Clair Obscur having a million and one “game-breaking” builds means that I can find something that feels good. Most rpgs, even good rpgs, don’t offer me that sort of opportunity.
i’ve barely used verso, though i’m still like midway through act 2 i think, just got to the monolith
monoco’s enemy skill that ignores shields has been a big help for some boss fights and sciel being able to double maelle’s Big Damage is nice
admittedly i played this right after i finished romancing saga 2, i wasn’t doing it any favors
just beat the game today and i never got this cheater picto youse are talking abt. i’m p sure the most damage i ever did was like 100k lol. kinda owns. the variety of experiences is cool.
idk if i wanna do post (although it’s not really “post” it’s more like “let’s ignore everything that just happened lol”) even though there’s sooooo much third act stuff i skipped.
i like that both the endings are kinda just different amounts of sad. it feels appropriate. but again, it doesn’t really make me wanna touch the post game stuff cos like, it feels antithetical to the story. idk who cares (me) play the game (i care).
also i pulled sciel out of retirement for the last dungeon and she instantly did like 10 times as much damage as lune had been so lol
that’s actually the second to last big dungeon in the game and the last one before it opens all the way up and lets you fly around doing side stuff chrono trigger style
got a ue5 crash fighting the second form of the paintress
what a dogshit engine
