As a kid, I played Bomberman and was young enough to find the idea of him becoming human if he reached the surface deeply moving.

When I beat it as an adult and he turns into Lode Runner, it felt like a capitalist dystopia, this-world-is-a-prison rug pull. It genuinely bothered me! Bomberman becomes human, and the first thing he does is take (whether by choice or circumstance, both depressing options) a dangerous job in an underground mine to gather gold??

By then, after a decade and change in the workforce myself, it hit me hard in an “Oh snap! I’ve just been working dumb jobs and totally forgot to have a meaningful life! Dang!” kind of way.

In my case, obviously there are worse things than having had continuous employment that alllllmost covers the price of existing on earth! Especially for someone of my generation.

I just wanted more for Bomberman
