DYING EARTH will be a 4000 year old pro-environment, anti-global capitalism single player Stepmania mod/game and art installation.
GAMEPLAY
Dying Earth will play like any other Dance Dance Revolution game or clone, but because the machine only holds one player at a time, users are encouraged to share playthroughs and work towards getting a good collective score. When a high score on a song is achieved, the machine will dispense seeds for the player(s) to plant somewhere fertile.
MATERIAL
The cabinet for Dying Earth will be made of limestone and recycled, repainted parts of old Dance Dance Revolution machines. The computer tower and monitor inside of the cabinet will be sourced from an office building in a state of liquidation. Ideally, the machine will be powered by swaths of people in hooded robes on stationary bicycles.
AUDIO
The music in Dying Earth will be curated with radical lyrical content and danceability in mind. Songs with (interpreted) subtle esoteric and spiritual themes unique to their respective genre’s history will be selected as well to be made note of among more obviously themed tracks.
GRAPHICS
Visuals for Dying Earth will be influenced by the graphics of actual Bemani games, early 00’s music videos, David Cronenberg, organic food packaging, and 90’s UK rave culture.
SENSUAL PROPERTIES
Dying Earth will smell like orange spice sometimes. Occasionally it will smell like patchouli and steamed greens. Dying Earth will never be cleaned, that is the Dying Earth Promise. You are invited to start fires and cook soups and stews near Dying Earth. You can do other things too.
LOCATION
Dying Earth will be displayed outdoors, where it may be exposed to acid rain that may change the shape of its limestone exterior. I was thinking of a desert or a mountain in one of the three green corners of the United States.
