Beat the game awhile ago. Man that boss is DUMB.
There seems to be so little buzz about this game that it makes me sad. I guess it’s pretty forgettable? I loved the first one despite the flaws.
It’s Mirror’s Edge Catalyst all over again
And this one is actually sold on Steam!
Idk, I hear it’s a pretty great game, but seems to be quite a standard polished sequel, so not many people are saying things about it other than “it’s a really solid sequel”
No the game does totally fall apart at the end. You can just feel it unravel a bit as you inch closer to one of the worst boss fights in video games.
I think we should push for finished games, that’s really becoming a problem as of late.
maybe they’ll fix it in the director’s cut
i’ll still have to properly start playing this … even though day-1-purchasing, I’ve spent maybe 20 minutes with it?
A friend of mine did the whole tutorial thingy and got an achievement for that.
But!
After having finished watch_dogz, i think i needed some time off of h4xx0ring things (and come to think of it, finish up my journey in the _dogz-thread! off to do that now~)
It’s just pretty underwhelming. It doesn’t have a single thing it can claim as new or better than their first DX remake besides more reflective surfaces. They’ve learned nothing about how to structure meaningful choices and despite being one of the 2 companies on earth that can make proper Looking-Glass-esque levels (large and multi-pathed) it’s meaningless when you own every traversal option from the title screen.
Writing varies between the worst sort of thuddingly obvious and properly expressing empathy for oppression (by virtue of roleplaying, same as Papers, Please). It’s not terrible but the focused writing of Witcher 3 absolutely destroys it.
They seem content to just make their first Deus Ex again, which, well, it was better than I had any hope for, and it’s my favorite genre, but that’s still not good enough.
Not sure if I agree that multiple paths have to be mutually excluded to the player to be meaningful…
Anyways, what is the other company that can make Looking Glass levels?
Arcane Studios, I presume
I think a lot of the interest in multiple paths is the hidden information – you want to know what’s back there; if it’s passable with a resource cost, you scout around to map the space (I find this interesting on its own) and then make a decision with the best information you have. Time pressures and hostile enemies can help spice this up (in a similar way, survival horror with optimal paths and resource costs to traversal is interesting). But once the character can permanently open any door type on first approach, the reason for scouting and pondering is lost. I still engage and navigate the entire level but it holds much less meaning.
Looking Glass Levels: Arkane Studios, of course! Dishonored was a joy because unlike the Splinter Cell team’s puzzle-box rooms they think in terms of entire levels (the One True Way amen).
This is the Dark Souls 3 of Deus Ex
it’s been that kind of year all around
A lot of people were talking about DS3 all over the net, though, even if it was for a short period.
I literally haven’t seen a single thing about this game anywhere outside of this thread.
I just finished this earlier in the week. Really not a lot of talk about it, but in truth it’s basically a smoothed out version of the original but missing the best aspects of it. I’d sum it up as a game that more people will like and less people will love.
seconded, and that’s … a bit surprising, considering that the first seems to have sold pretty well.
yeah, it’s making this + the new mirror’s edge seem like miscalculations, I guess slightly-more-thoughtful-than-the-norm-but-still-murder-sim-y single player AAA titles aren’t worth the publisher investment these days.
curious how dishonored 2 fares. and hitman’s continued to be (and do) great afaik.
I can tell you that AAA guys think the only sane path is chasing open-world games that promise the player freedom to do anything. You can see this in the success of Skyrim and GTA despite all the places they fall down, and you can see it in the mini-MMOs currently dominating Steam. You can see it in the hype for No Man’s Sky. People believe in the promise of a vast expanse more than tightness.
Player’s don’t appear to be terribly discerning of fidelity and tightness achieved by single-player scoped games.
Bethesda bucks the trend with Wolfenstein, Doom, and their other single player games, as does 2K, but it’s unclear how much that’s subsidized by their open-world world-beating games.
so. I finally started playing this for real!
And only needed three tries, thanks to the the tutorial, which is so forgettable yawn-inducing that I will skip it w/ one screenshot:
… yeah, whatever.
On to the cool stuff!
first thing I noticed is that I thought that Jensen’s just an augmented dork. Was a bit surprised to find out he’s a Vampire as well, or is anti-mirror-coating a thing in 2029, too?
… but even before I got to hatin’ on this game, it wittingly told me toooo~ooo
- and here I am left wondering then if a Disney x Deus Ex crossover will become a thing™ in Kingdom Hearts 3 …… it’d be a nice troll if that’s the case, let’s see whether they dare ~~~
game’s on then, let’s see if AMD will make it to 2029.
Joke’s on AMD tho, PC seems to be running a bit too hot there, what with that reddish glow ~~~
#AMDFansKnowWhatIamTalkingBout #BURN #joke’sOnMe
… speaking of burning things:
that printer wouldn’t catch fire, nice trolling there, Eidos!
… however, at least you can use that washing machine, and it apparently isn’t a samsung model, because it didn’t explode. Not seen any Samsung Galaxy Note 7 'round there, #hiddenMessage?
so, what else can I say about 2029 …
… TV program didn’t exactly improve, huh.
Well, at least one thing is still as awesome as it is nowadays:
cornflakes packaging, reminiscent of an era where everything and everyone looks like they had a bit too much weed, speed, cocaine and LSD.
=> tl;dr:
future cornflakes packaging is still as awesome as it has been. 5/5 future trip … for now.
Your “AAA open world games are a hilarious pile mismanaged assets” posts are my favorite.
I had the same experience. The tutorial is so unengaging I couldn’t muster the enthusiasms to play.
The fact that it runs like crap in my computer also contributed I guess.
Good thing it immediately opens up when the game proper starts, and it turns interesting realy quick.
Anyway I’ll have to park this one until I upgrade my aging video card.
Also, damn but 2029 dystopic Prague has better cereal variety than modern-day Sweden lol
