Dual Hearts

Having a seriously special time with this game so I thought I’d start sharing my screenshots
The game’s about entering people’s dreams with your chubby dream pig rabbit thing (who has a very long canon name I don’t remember, I’ve named him Jobe) and doing psychonauts adjacent things.

This game is so pretty and cute and the town is absolutely bursting with hangoutitude between its day/night cycle, numerous townsfolk doing their own thing and coastal ambience. I’ve been mostly taking screenies of Jobe because I would die for him

Word of warning bc i feel people in this kinda space will care, i’ve started experimenting with the graphics settings on my emulator and i’ve got the game now set to 720, upscaled to 1080p for my screen (and i turned the bilinear filtering off). i love having ever so slightly crispy pixels but a decent resolution like this.

Jobe reminds me of this video:

the upscaling on this looks great. i’m personally a big fan of doing this with some games, like gurumin looks fantastic at high resolutions. this cartoony stuff ages super well imo

that’s pretty tasteful up-rezzing. curious what the UI/HUD stuff looks like with the higher res

this game is 480i only, right? didn’t see it listed on any of the 480p compatibility lists. that’s my real issue with most PS2 games. many of them handle a modest upscale very, very well, but the interlacing is often frustrating

So it’s just been revealed that this man is like, punished santa claus (I missed the line where he’s like “i havent worn that in a long time…”) lol

Not bad! Obviously, if it’s an image then chances are it’s not going to scale up without issues, but that sort of thing doesn’t bother me much

Recorded a little video because yall need to hear Jobe’s funny little sounds. I will never get tired of the YEEAWAWAWAWAWA

So, I helped Santa get his groove back. I guess I didn’t take any screencaps, but the boss of this area was the most infurating thing I’ve pushed through in a game for a while. Across the board, this game is usually so chill, but the bosses are always really tough and time consuming. I feel bad for my friends who sat in call listening to me make dying whale noises for an hour and a half.

Next up was a cute little area where we helped to reunite the elements of naaature. The music and the cute framing honestly made me quite emotional here, idk this whole game has been activating the neurons that fire whenever I play croc (my first game) so I’ve been getting emotional a lot lmao.

Because I can’t catch a break, this boss was also a pain in the ass, albeit less so than the last guy. It wasn’t hard, per se, but it managed to cram basically every kind of jank this game has (unreliable lock-on, weird hit boxes, random chance, weapon swapping) into one cheeky package. It’s a shame I keep being primed to dislike these fights because a giggling flying clam that changes the seasons is a pretty fun concept!

And now, hopefully, we can enjoy a little more hangoutitude for a bit.

I forgot to post a link to the music for that level I mentioned!! Give it a listen. It’s super sweet and kinda pensive.

I just realised this game has an extremely permissive and theoretically infinite healing mechanic that was never explained to me, and now i feel so silly for having struggled through any boss fight LMAO

I finished the game! I cant really be bothered with the play by play i did last post so here’s a final round of screencaps
Honestly think this game has become a new favourite. Far from perfect (and the final boss made me want to die) but I love it and its world and characters and weirdly ambitious, mostly successful everything.

Behold, the inexplicable gradient spike that damages you on contact. The last few levels have a bunch of these for some reason
