DRWHO

I got into doctor back after 2005 when aderack would post constantly about it on IC. I caught up on the specials and I am back in.

I am amazed I was able to avoid hearing how this episode played out while I was waiting for my quarantine to end and go leach off my folk’s Disney plus account.

Yeah, these three have been the best the show’s been since those episodes the Freddy’s Dead director did. The bigeneration thing thematically works counter to that “well that’s ok then” scene so, hey why not.

youtube knows i like doctor who again so it keeps showing me videos like this and i found this thumbnail very funny

i was on tumblr during the heyday of SuperWhoLock, and i remember when everyone fawned over 10th doctor “the hot slim young doctor with way too much hair gel” and i was like yeah? i mean, sure (he disappointed me right away not using his normal accent, Scottish accents are sexier)

but like on seeing this i 1. laughed @ babyfaced 30 something david tennant 2. was immediately like “ah yeah i get it now” @ actually bony scruffy 50 something david tennant (with WAY MORE extreme hair gel lol)

I hope this post wasn’t too thirsty (it was mostly a bit! as part of the tumblr observation! i swear!!) but i also think i have given away which doctors i prefer looks wise (eg gangly and old)

until ncuti gatwa holy shit him dancing it up in a club in the trailer for the christmas ep. gahhh

RTD always seems to be acutely aware that he’s making a kids’ show and the messaging stuff is always even more commendable for that.

The new leads seem strong. Let’s see where this goes.

I know we’re back because internet people are already claiming random characters are the rani

Reminds me of how Torchwood sucked because it wanted to be ‘adult’ but Sarah Jane Smith Adventures was pretty much just more doctor who and pretty dang good from what I saw.

Didn’t really feel any of the earlier specials but this new doctor is charming and I think its cool that rtd features trans characters when this is a product produced on terf island, feels like something the people making dr who had to fight for

I hope we never see tennant doctor again tbh. I like tennant in non drwho contexts but he is just a bunch of cliches and overdone catchphrases when he plays the doctor

I am already seeing a lot of red flags about rtd’s penchant for insufferable mystery box plots that resolve in the most deflating ways and I hope he has gotten better about that. Definitely felt my gorge rise whenever there was any conversation about the doctor not being from gallifrey

I really really liked this one. The new doctor is fantastic, the story really did a good job of explaining the Vibes Based Rules of Doctor Who (or lack thereof). Much, much, much less continuity except for the Mavity joke.

And we’re back to the RTD gay people just casually exist as people stuff. Also Doctor Who refrencing 80s anti HIV slogans that had faded out of use before I was a middle schooler as a throway joke was delightful.

This is dumb and inessential but that’s…kinda doctor who. The mystery box plots are kind of just…what doctor who has been for a while and if I’m going to deal with it again at least it seems like the ride is going to be fun and less pathos filled. Also more about people, I really missed that part of RTD’s writing.

alright i watched it and i really enjoyed it. however because im an irascible lil scamp (who’s nervous about giving into terminal Doctor Who fangirlism), instead of talking about it im gonna recommend Sapphire and Steel because i learned its all on YouTube/Tubi

if you have any love for Who Classic watch all of this immediately it fucking rips. AS a terminal Doctor who fangirl i have to readily concede S&S takes it out behind the barn. “what if the Doctor was two hot British actors at the same time” is a question that already got answered 40 years ago sorry Russ

Sapphire and Steel rules but it can be even more slow paced than those old Doctor Who serials.

true but it’s so dense with atmosphere and carefully avoids ever explaining a damn thing that’s going on (besides “cosmic horrors did a time crime, some mysterious time detectives (that are humanlike embodiments of natural elements) are here to solve it”) and that goes a long way for me

Ghost Light is my favorite Doctor Who serial and S&S is just wall to wall Ghost Lights

happy new year’s i celebrated by watching this instead of the TV movie

paul mcgann saying “i hated that wig” in a venomous whisper is the mood im going into 2024 with

edit: that and sly mccoy saying “explain the worm”

i forgot this movie features a young will sasso. if you’ve ever wanted to six degrees of separation your way from Doctor Who to Pulp Fiction there’s your inroad

really fun rusty davies show that is blatantly a pair of 7th doctor serials with the numbers filed off

Marcie is so obviously the Doctor here but it’s like perfect for me because i tried to be exactly the kind of portentous nerd in middle school that Marcie is long before i ever watched Doctor Who, and part of why i love Doctor Who is that it’s ultimately a hero adventure show about a portentous nerd, so this is a sterling example of a snake eating its own ass

The villain literally says “Nothing in the world can stop me now!” at the start in case you accidentally think this isn’t ersatz Doctor Who lol

edit the teacher character is so Barbara omg

i think i definitely saw some of that in its day

aaaaaa thank u i appreciate the liveblog i loved Tom and Reets shitty 80s fashion immediately (and, Marcie having that big cardigan & a giant oar strapped to her back like a sword… again not unlike what i was like in high school lol)

i love that kate winslets character (Reet) has the yoyo and Tom has his skateboard and Marcie has her oar and TV knowledge, they’re a real Earthbound-ass party of stereotypical 80s kids. wielding symbolic “weapons” and savvy, but still out of their depths. And their 4th party member being the skeptical but cool teacher rules

“you’re no better than nazis!”

“they are nazis”
