DooM

I guess Romero confirmed Blackroom to be cancelled in the last chapter of Doom Guy.

I didn’t know Romero was making Sigil 2

Been replaying DOOM as part of my reading list and I just got to what I think is Sandy Petersen’s first id map ever, Halls of the Damned! And, shit!!!, that level is cruel and such a blast.

I think this was also the first map I ever played multiplayer on when Doom came in the collectors edition of the Xbox port of Doom 3.

It’s definitely better than zdoom high-rez texture filtered vasaline-o-vision at least.

I have no idea why they actively choose to make Zdoom look at shitty as possible in default settings.

Hey, if you want to play a solid set of tight and challenging Doom 2 maps, checkout nerve.wad. It is the expansion mapset for Doom 2 that was included in the BFG edition of Doom 3 – No Rest for the Living. People have ripped it and made it playable in sourcports. I started and finished it today on UV and was really impressed by it.

This is a demo wad showcasing some of ACE Engine features.
ACE Engine is DOS Doom2 code execution hack that injects new features to the original game.
https://doomshack.org/uploads/ademo1.zip
It will only work in DOS Doom2. (or GZDoom)
Run with command: doom2 -file ademo1.wad

I feel so goofy each time I try to launch a pwad with something like Retro Doom. I can get sigil 1 working just fine, simply dragging the wad onto the retrodoom exe. But when I do the same thing with Sigil 2, and load that episode, it’s just Thy Flesh Consumed.

Somehow I had never heard of Doom Retro before this week. While I don’t really like the change to how stimpacks work (it seems like you can bank yhem?) it’s otherwise the best ‘enhanced’ doom port I’ve messed with.

Even at high rez it looks so much better than GZDoom’s vasaline nightmare, plus one button changes it to the original resolution. And the mouse controls confine you to one axis so it doesn’t fuck with the gameplay too much! BUT IT ALSO ACCEPTS THE KEYBOARD CONTROLS WITHOUT REMAPPING. The graphical enhancements, like the screen shake and differebt blood colors kind of annoy me as purist but also are well considered and don’t feel jarring. Plus it does a decent job emulating the original invisibility effect too.

The rotating map is confusing though, for the kind of game that doom is but that’s a quibble.

I still think chocolate doom or dosbox is the best way to play doom but at least I have something for folks who can’t get over it’s weird old ways now.

I’ve played a lot of Doom with Doom Retro and it’s one of the simplest, quick to use and basically inoffensive attempts to “polish” Doom that I’ve seen. It’s my go to, but I’m not super hardcore or sensitive to all of Doom’s engine details.

I still can’t Sigil 2 to play in it though!!!
