Damn, I like that! But then I like everything that makes me see the start of E1M1 of Doom 2 in a new light. Best start to a game ever and if I ever have money for a bachelor pad I’ll hang a huge ass print of it over my bed or so that you see it right when you come in the door

Casually played through the first episode of No End In Sight and up to the first interlude of DooM Zero on Switch.

The secrets in No End In Sight are great, some of them demand you engage with the map in neat ways. It’s not too hard to get lost, but it’s also somehow pretty easy to familiarize yourself with the layout.

DooM Zero’s maps are short and visually open so progression is pretty frictionless. The maps are linear with an occasional cute choice, but the map dynamics on display are bodacious. The secrets haven’t been as satisfying to suss out unfortunately

My YT algorithm has been overtaken by these in the last week or so

I’ve been casually Dooming my way through BTSX 1&2 and despite being Pretty Good most of the time I think neither of them are as pleasingly savage as Sunlust or (have I made this up?) Eviternity

Hell Revealed 2 doesn’t mess around and wants you dead at the starting point of every map so far I’ve played. Also nice to return to smaller maps with corridors and deathtraps aplenty, which was something that BTSX replaced with a scope that was frequently exhausting with a handful of levels demanding I flip a long-forgotten switch after 25 minutes of nonstop murder

90’s Doom wad level design is often so very different from more contemporary Doom wad level design. i think BTSX is a vanilla wad (i could be wrong there?) but even with vanilla wads, the popular sensibilities in the community have changed so much from what people expect from any given Doom level.

also i personally can’t stand most slaughtery style mapsets, but i guess i just don’t have the patience for the grind.

Digging further into Hell Revealed 2 has seen a disappointing reliance on the BFG for most crowd-control situations (by design, given the overly-generous ammo pools) resulting in a very limited switch between super shotgun-rocket-BFG combos and a dependence on luck. I couldn’t tell you what qualifies a ā€˜slaughtermap’ per se, perhaps the ones I mentioned in my earlier post reflect this unintentionally, but I’m certainly left with a better appreciation of their craft than what’s on display here

I think any given successful Doom level is one that balances thoughtful weapon usage or prevents you from endlessly cheesing encounters when you influence the environment. There’s obviously more to it than these elements but for me personally these two things have always appealed to me in Doom et al

Hell Revealed 1+2 are definitely the classic definition of ā€œslaughter mapā€ - HR1 is sort of the first big mapset that set that whole standard. though i know a lot of Doom people don’t like HR2 nearly as much. the standard for what people tend to expect from ā€œslaughter mapsā€ now is something more modern though - usually things that have big architecture and a much more epic scale… like Deus Vult 2 or something like that. i personally find so much of those exhausting and also kind of predictable in terms of encounters.

i’ve always liked the exploring spaces part of Doom, and i generally like being surprised by different styles and approaches. i think that’s one of the biggest things that wears me down with slaughter stuff. also the thought that ā€œi could be playing literally anything else right now instead of banging my head against the wall in this random Doom mapā€

Deus Vult 2 turned me off with the novelty of Woo-style dual pistols after a good 20 minutes because the firing rhythm made the chaingun cha-cha obsolete and I took it for a bad omen in general

Wish I could remember the name of the megawad that uses lots of sci-fi Native American iconography. That one was excellent

ah yeah that’s Ancient Aliens. it’s definitely a cool looking set and there are some cool levels in there from what i’ve seen, though i’m not a super big fan of skillsaw (a lot of the normie popular Doom mappers i’m not a huge fan of tbh). i’m not a good person to talk to at all when it comes to showing much approval/excitement towards some of the more popular/big/normie sets though lmao.
