designer’s folly

I have to be careful because being able to say this and be believed is the skill my work cultivates most

unfortunately it is not the same as actually being right

I really love how intractable the demons can be despite having a simple hierarchy of tasks. Just the random flits the demons occasionally make feel more like board game movements than most enemy behaviors in a traditional roguelike.

imo not enough has been written about how videogame designers took a lot of the wrong lessons from board games in the late teens

Hell yes. Expectations for 2016 Doom were really low, then the game turned out interestingly enough and it made me hype for an even better version of that when I saw Eternal. I was on board for the whole thinking man’s chess piece shooter, too. It sounded neat, I could easily see myself playing that. Ended up with a whole lot of badly designed nothing, however

Oh Hugo Martin, you were supposed to bring balance to the force. How you have steered us wrong

It is actually baffling how things like this happen. He clearly has a lot of good ideas and his head screwed on right - at least that’s what it looks like to me from the outside - and still we can end up with a result like that. Game dev is brutal. I can see it with myself too. You can have a lot of game design theory down really well, talk about it articulately, have the right ideas, etc, and then when it comes to making a game it all kinda falls apart and you still end up with something wholly unenlightened.

i didn’t really have any particular hype for Eternal, but a friend picked it up and told me they thought it was great, and yeah…

as soon as i saw that punching enemies no longer did damage, i felt a great sense of foreboding haha.

i agree that 2016 feels like it kind of accidentally came together and also exceeded everyone’s expectations, but i think what it gets right about Doom combat is the ability to freestyle. Eternal is just like, “ok, here’s a room, do it this way, or you’re gonna die.”

that’s just like, immensely uninteresting to me. not to mention how serious the game takes itself.

If you’re looking to follow up on DOOM 2016, Prodeus is out in Early Access.

The devs are also updating their channel with mapping tutorials.

The really depressing thing about Eternal is the way the doubling down has left them no room to maneuver, which you can see in the new DLC that just came out. There are now Fans of the stupid lugubrious Story and all successive entries will be obligated to dig deeper into the proper nouns of Lore. They need another reboot already!

I should say I still actually enjoyed eternal because the movement and the explosions fundamentally feel good but it’s very empty and manic at its best

is eternal another example of a game that everyone who doesn’t post here thinks is good or do i just need a bigger sample size

I’m not active in other online communities. Judging from YouTube comments and articles from critics I’ve seen though I’d say yeah, it’s been very, very well received. Some people criticized the slow walk sections (lol, just thinking about that being in a Doom game…) with the tentacles that attack you or the platforming… Stuff like that. It didn’t seem to make them catch on to the bigger picture though and they just love the game anyway

do people just want to be told what to do

is this why fascism is back

very well received and much, much better selling than the 2016 game

Seems like a Dark Souls 2 situation where review outlets clamber through a tiny window before the wave of fanish public reaction to a franchise on name alone, uncritically praising it on the merits of the success of it’s predecessor. The majority of consumer reviews are empty excersizes in brand identification since Doom made Doom cool again.

Tickles me that even Tim, having quietly promised himself to only be a Nice Boy to games since going full time critic can’t help but hate on Eternal.

I know Doom Eternal is bad because of the hollow, sinking feeling it gave me, and I suspect critics rushing through reviews 24 hours before the game releases just feel that for every game
