No End in Sight is the WAD in question, by a bunch of DooM the Way id Did vets.

It’s kinda cute watching them slowly add stuff that’s been in ZDoom for about 20 years

I picked up Doom and Doom 2 on PS4 this week. They are discounted right now, but it’s not as if they are expensive anyway. I have not played either since their original releases. I will probably not be very good at them. I have vague memories of Doom 2 in particular being difficult and the final boss impossible for me.

In a DF Retro exclusive, John Linneman talks with Nightdive Studios about the process of bringing the classic, totally original Nintendo 64 rendition of Doom over to the current-gen platforms. In this video, you’ll see what made the original release so fascinating, while Nightdive staff tell all on how the game was reverse-engineered and delivered on current-gen platforms. Oh - and is this the first 1440p Xbox One S game?

E3M2?

Finally finished Ancient Aliens today. Good lord that was difficult but very entertaining!

Favourite vanilla map? For me it’s E4M2.

this is kind of a hardcore pick but yeah E4M2 fucking rules lol, E4 is absolutely the best episode in The Ultimate Doom. it’s just so incredibly mean on UV

Yeah E4 has the best aesthetics of any episode, American McGee maps, a NIN reference, what’s not to love

E4M2 is cramped. It’s such a fight for space and that’s where Doom combat excells imo. It has great traversal loops with lots of verticality.

For people who like E4 the obvious recommendation is Sigil but my second pick would be Crusades.

More like American McPee

I’ve encountered an annoying bug in the PS4 port of the original Doom. Half the time when I die, the respawn doesn’t trigger. The game is not frozen–I can still open the map and change weapons–but I’m stuck forever and can do nothing but exit or load a save. And, of course, I rarely remember to save so I have to repeat at least a few levels each time.

I even tried enabling the ā€œgod modeā€ cheat. But that didn’t help. My life refilled and I was still stuck.

One of the many things I had forgotten about Doom is that there are secret levels. I stumbled upon one last night and it sure was difficult. (I didn’t beat it. I tried a few times and then hit the bug I just mentioned.)

Finally getting around to playing John Romero’s Sigil. It’s… different.

I finished the fourth episode of Doom today. I don’t know that I was aware that a fourth episode existed. Given that it was released so much later, I was a little disappointed not to see new textures and things.

It’s hard to imagine playing Doom on the highest difficulty levels. I guess it would help to be familiar with the areas, as opposed to wandering aimlessly and being constantly surprised by enemies like me.

A few levels took me forever because I didn’t know where to go next. In most cases, I’d missed a switch. The worst case of this for me was the second level in Thy Flesh Consumed. At first it was because I didn’t remember that there was a sprint button. And then, even with that, I had a hard time finding the way forward.

Now I’ll have to decide whether to jump right in and play some of the add-on level packs or finally try this copy of Final Fantasy 15 that I’ve had lying around for months. (Seeing half my contact list playing the FF7 remake reminded me that I’ve never even inserted the disc.)

I can only marvel whenever I’m reminded there are people who don’t have autorun always on.

glad you liked them! i’m happy i finally managed to go back and finish those up (well, with the exception of Doom 1 E4 i guess, which i may or may not do). i do feel like i repeated myself a lot, esp in the Doom 2 one because my feelings about the game are a little more mixed.

anyway that’s probably why i’m not going to do Final Doom or the Master Levels or anything though since i feel like it’s just easy to repeat myself over and over again and it’s well-tread ground. but i will continue to sporadically make those Doom Mixtape videos about PWAD levels i like
