i’m several years late to the party but i finally played JPCP, a megawad by the japanese doom community. i really liked it! its probably one of the better mapsets ive played in the past few years, though admittedly im not up to date. its pretty solid to great up until the last 4 or 5 maps, which are way too big and confusing and puzzle-oriented for my liking, to the point where i finished one of the last maps in the set entirely on accident. theres a lot of good work in there from authors like burabojunior (whose maps are really solid for the most part even if hes mean as fuck with armor placement) and kurashiki (whose maps are weird and add a lot of flavor to the project) to the point where some of the maps i didnt like didnt really detract from the whole that much. even the more annoying maps are really striking visually - map25 and 29 in particular stand out. the music choices are also super good!

maps i thought were great: map11, map13, map19, map25, map29. map05 had my favorite music

Damn… will this eventually remove the need for sourceports?

the music is still a recording that…pauses…at the end of every loop, so I get a 3-second hit of pure ennui every one minute forty-one seconds

Sounds ideal

that’s bizarre considering the patch notes say

Did you make any engine enhancements to support Add-ons?

For Add-ons in this release we’ve added real-time MIDI playback. This allows for WADs that include custom music to have that played. Also, we’ve removed some of the engine limitations to allow for larger MegaWAD files to be loaded.

so if real-time MIDI playback is working for add-ons, why are they still using recordings for non-add-ons???

ugh

I definitely have the patch, I installed Sigil and TNT before getting on the bus

This marks the first fan release supported by an official port, it’s a E1 replacement.

You can download it for source ports here.

Hoping they at some point add the Doom 2 Master Levels too

EDIT: Just learnt that these are actually included with Doom 2 so that’s cool

Is Hedon actually supposed to be good or is that just a joke because of its horny?

The only folks I’ve seen talk Hedon up have been the exact same kind of horny that Hedon targets

The hedon guy is also a transphobe because the only guys who make games like this have brain poison apparently

That’s… not even a little surprising, given the people that have tried to talk it up

There was certainly something obviously off about the game because I couldn’t even be lured in by the promise of “Doom + Arx Fatalis”

Or at least I couldn’t be convinced that that guy would succeed at capturing what makes either of those games any good
