Got to yokohama then went to bed. Okay yeah I’m definitely more interested in this than the plot of any of the other yaks
Really, really, wish the game had more music for the non-cinematic cutscenes though. The tracks seem to be all 30 seconds long so you hear them loop approximately 100 times in a single dialogue
I’m not sure why they draw that static ring around the button, which looks like it’s indicating the safe zone, because the condition appears to be, ‘size of the button icon or smaller’
last project we were having a terrible time with an identical timing challenge indicated by a shrinking ring; eventually we realized the UI layer it was on was threaded so inconsistently our results were +/- a quarter of a second
so we just made the timing hilariously generous and disconnected the visual design from what we actually checked for input
I just finally got to the part where you’re allowed to change jobs after 6-7 hours and:
I’m amazed that it only took me three sittings to get that far, given how little I’ve wanted to focus on games lately;
relatedly, I almost can’t believe how tolerable the sloooow pacing is, they really went for it with the dragon quest comparisons, the confidence they had in making the combat basically bad for the first several hours would’ve turned me off in 95% of cases;
the cinematography is a hyperactive joke, this game is basically shot and edited like a sitcom (though the depth of field is really nice in 4K);
which is fine and representative, actually, they basically went for a combination of mario RPG + parody RPGmaker games + disco elysium + yakuza and it all absolutely works;
but the music and dungeon design should really be better
Seriously! Having a party to bond with is such a perfect addition to the Yakuza formula that it now feels hard to imagine playing one of these games without it. The social link scenes at the bar are great – it really feels like you’re shooting the shit at your favorite hangout zone.
6 gave Kiryu his whole team of young yaks to learn the ways of the Dragon, so the party thing here seems like a natural evolution. My only surprise with 7 is that it isn’t one of them, honestly. There were at least two that were set up perfect for it.
I watched someone stream a bunch of this and it seems to be bubbling over with personality but man, some of the battles seem to be so slow to grind out. Maybe they just picked the wrong jobs or didn’t grind enough but some of the boss battles seemed to take about ten or so minutes to complete.
I think you could get very stuck with certain job combinations and not having unlocked certain skills. The party absolutely needs a dedicated healer/MP generator in bosses and it helps to have some multi-jobbers unlock stuff from some of the other paths so they can pick up the slack when needed. Otherwise you best be iteming up. Freelancer is an interesting one since it seems awful (no weapon?). I’m assuming there’s an item that makes your fists super powerful and that some of the later skills are ridiculously good. Hyper Swagger is great and is worth levelling freelancer just so Ichiban can have it forever.
i almost one shot a boss last night with pretty much no grinding prior so yeah maybe the jobs, though i think i might have gotten lucky on some random drops and have relatively good crafted gear for my level
the weakness prompt is broken if you’re playing in english (french etc. is fine) and they’ve still not patched it so seems unlikely at this point, that might make random battles slower in some cases
