This is not a best game of 1991, but the Genesis version of Undead Line, which is not as cool as the MSX2 version from 1989, is a brutally hard STG from T&E Soft, directed by Tokihiro Naito, creator of HYDLIDE, so I am contractually obligated to bring it up.
I vote for Metroid 2, and I vote for Street Fighter 2.
I nominate Lemmings as being a pretty influential and still fairly unique puzzle game that hasn’t had many similar imitators that surpassed it. Animation and sound design were pretty memorable for the year and it predates The Sims as a game in which playing the game as intended could also give way to cruel Rube-Goldberg machines as an alternate form of play.

When you’re adding to the list, add one game at a time. That way, it gives other people a chance to play and contribute to the list.
Imagine if someone added 12 games in one post and blanketed the list in their choices. That would be pretty bad!
Not your post though. Your posts are never bad.
I’ll add Lemmings since that’s the one you wrote about. If someone else posts about a game and you want to talk more about Street Fighter II or Metroid II, I’ll add your vote to the tally.
Ah sorry, misunderstood voting vs nomination. Lemmings addition is what I’d rather focus on.
Just updated the top post. Thank you everybody for being patient with me as I try to clarify the rules. I swear they make a better discussion than your typical “BEST GAMES EVER” list thread.
ZZT came out in 1991 and i’m nominating it. it’s a game as toolset that set the template to come after for “user generated content” and it’s still used by a lot of people. also the first game by Tim Sweeney (for better or for worse)
there’s nothing I love more than when people make their threads into little games or puzzles, they’re like wakeup bumps on the road
It was really funny in the last thread whenever someone broke a rule. I would try to compose a kind response. Before I could, you would come in and go “BRR WRONG!” It made me think my rules made sense to at least one other person.
rules are fun as fuck when they don’t actually matter and there’s no real consequence. good ol play
I’ve spent the last 36 hours trying to come up with a justification for nominating Earnest Evans and I might spend another 36 on this too
Hey Minty 1991 is Effora and Jeffora (I will never learn the real name of this) the most cursed Ultima/Ys like.
I won’t know until I play it 2 player
You need no justification beyond it being EARNEST FUCKING EVANS.
1991 was also the year that gave us the very not-wizardry first person dongeon crawl, Might and Magic 3, which is a pretty glorious follow up to the fork off of wizardry that began with Bard’s Tale
Also, have to recommend Monkey Island 2, probably my pick for the peak point and click adventure game, though my vote for GOTY goes to Street Fighter 2
I found Metroid 2 theme is too chill and upbeat, I can’t realize have no enough HP almost every time. It’s like a deep space walk simulator on green screen.
I also learned so much new stuffs when I revisit Street Fighter II then found a little odd about Ken’s location on map.
I notice something very detail in Metroid 2, when you kill all 8 Gawrons come from the underground, there will be a special sound effect to let you know.
I thought it was a some kind space Piranha when I read the manual but it attacks me by its spike mouth.
Oh my god, that art is incredible.
