SMTIV has the distinction of using its Chinese mythology derived demons for hateful xenophobia! http://eirikrjs.blogspot.com/2015/09/SMT-identity-crisis-final.html?m=1 under the 4th header here.
TL;DR: there is a mandatory subplot where you have to “reclaim” Ikebukuro (aka Chinatown in Tokyo) from “foreign demons”. It sucks!!

there is a community of Chinese immigrants in Ikebukuro but generally when people think of Chinatown in the Tokyo metropolitan area, they mean Yokohama Chinatown

it doesn’t seem like it’s that obscure an idea

plus if xenophobic game developers were going to do some racist shit in a game it makes sense they would target a place of more recent immigration rather than an established ‘historic’ spot

it would be more offensive to refer to anything in yokohama as tokyo imo lol

My point was not to argue that Yokohama is a part of Tokyo, but that if you go to someone in Tokyo and ask them about Chinatown, no one will ask you if you mean Ikebukuro and everyone automatically assumes you mean Yokohama

lol i know i’m just saying sleepy didn’t mess up by saying ikebukuro was chinatown in tokyo, but if they said yokohama was chinatown in tokyo a ride or die tokyoite would take issue with granting the bridge and tunnel crowd tokyo status, just a bad joke sorry

What the others said. Ikebukuro is one of the (lesser) large areas in Tokyo and would never think of a very small 3-4 block radius as “china town” when I will say I’ve had Chinese Language Only Chinese food there. It’s a very nebulous description and what I found in Japanese was equally “some people are calling it a new china town.”

It was also a plot point in…Yakuza 5? 6? So it was in the air at the time of what if there was a chinatown in Tokyo.

i had a huge post about this but i realized it’s not really that interesting. but i guess there is a difference between places that one would refer to as ‘chinatown’ and places that have a notably high chinese population
