i was fucking around with reshade and found these bloomed out logos very funny:
(related: dks 1 looks nice with chromatic aberration, if i can think of a cool build i haven’t yet tried i think i’ll leave it on)

Last Remnant looks like FF12 but way worse and the lack of contrast in some places is almost comical

I can’t figure out how to read that title. Chexder? Thexder? For a while there I thought the x was some kind of double d thing
Yeah it’s Thexder
NES port title looks like CHEXDEƧ

I suddenly remembered this game a few weeks ago after not thinking about it for a decade when I read the passages in Between the World and Me about the hollow suburban dream world of 1980s media. The main memory I have of playing this as a kid is an uncanny and sinister atmosphere

EDIT: probably should’ve posted this in Worst Images on second thought
damn is that willy’s mom?
Yeah, Willy Beamish has a hot mom, hot older sister and hot school nurse
fuuuuck i have not thought about this game in decades, i remember a childhood friend of mine had it on his computer and i was blown away
iirc the soundtrack kind of slaps?
I played a version with a DOS speaker beeping “soundtrack” so I don’t know! I remember Silpheed from the same studio around the same time had a really good Adlib soundtrack so I can believe it though. I wonder if I could dig up a PC-88 ROM for Thexder instead of playing one of the ports
Silpheed (PC-88)

Silpheed (Sega CD)

eschatos on 360 realises the dream that mega cd silpheed tried to do.
after playing thexder, play alisia dragoon on mega drive, if you haven’t already
the font in western sh1 is amazing
study dammit
Nothing like Silent Hill to make me appreciate the PS1’s lovely dither patterns
Thexder on the Apple IIgs had an absolutely banging soundtrack. I was awful at it and couldn’t really figure out how to play though :\
kim?
was never a particularly big ps1 head as a lad because the laser in mine died early, enjoying getting back into it
Yeah it seems like the Apple IIgs mix is the best one. I’m not really blown away by the other versions. Ironically it’s the only version that doesn’t have a clean rip on youtube though (I heard it in gameplay video)
If you liked Thexder’s music you’ll like Silpheed’s too which sounds like it’s from the same composer. A very unusual style for videogame music at the time I think. Game Arts’ PC-88 titles feel like they come out of a parallel universe in general
