i make the same set of characters for each game and my magic knight character is typically also a quality character, and thus sort of a jack-of-all-trades, so the blueblood sword naturally fit that fighting style
The version i used in 2 ran with the blue flame and it was very fun
halberd is life. the easiest melee character in any game has to be the temple knight, you can just increase your health + stamina and upgrade your halberd and youāre set.
i play each game with the halberd at least once. It is kind of a pain to use in 2 because the sour spot penalty is so high, but if you do it right, NPC invaders just walk into your axe blade over and over until they die.
Very true in DeS, that range and hit detectionās so easy to abuse enemies with, long as you donāt get flanked or spent. On my second playthrough of Dark I chose whatever got the halberd (or closest weapon you can find early on), and my blue skinned Poking Cleric went wild widdit.
Thereās only a few weapons that clearly show major advantage over the rest, at least for beginners and those toward the start of the game. I admittedly got the āholy shit arrow off the drakeās tailā Sword after getting to the Belfry Gargoyles. It felt awesome since everything was new and exciting the first day it came out. And secrets/tips werenāt openly collected yet. But then stopped using it on my way to the second bell, it felt cheap.
Now the BALDER SIDE SWORD. I have affection for that weapon.
A Baldy knight just happened to drop it through my first few runs in the Parish, and the slightly better range/speed/stamina use/etc lasted me with upgrades, maybe 3/4s of the game or all the way through. It handles.
My Souls pro pal organized a 8 hour Demonās marathon get together yesterday. 5 people and a bunch of controller passing. We started fresh and played to the Penetrator fight. We might have used the item dupe trick a wee bit to keep things moving. I got to see way more of the game than I had before.
How come not one told me that thereās a weird Quake 1 homage boss!?
The bummer (or saving grace because weāre cheating baatards) is that we couldnāt get online for like 90% of the day.
After 10,000 years I finally managed to get my first successful invasion on this playthrough.
Except it turned out to be for the Old Monk fight, and they died before they could get to me.
Besides this I have had no luck whatsoever meeting any other players
Itās going to be weird when the world is emptied of messages and bloodstains, but in 16 hours of play and a fair amount of trying, I still havenāt had any actual online encounters. It kind of feels like that defeats the point of cramming in this run before the end of February, but Iām loving rediscovering the game.
As I mentioned before, Iāve only cleared the game once, using the royal class and ample spells like 6 years ago.
This time, Iām resolutely staying away from using magic. Thief class. Iāve rocked a dagger Iāve now upgraded to +7 since the beginning, though Iām enjoying keeping Hiltless as my alternate right arm weapon.
I love this game for its long corridors and big, enemy-less stretches of level. Iād maybe have to play other recent From games to more exactly compare the approaches, but I definitely feel like this amount of just stewing in atmosphere. When you initially explore these areas, you walk cautiously because there could be an enemy, and you have to look very studiously at each and every corner. Some levels more than others, but the diverse settings are so particular and lavish in their detail.
Itās also wild how many levels skimp on the shortcuts.
Like most Souls games, running is an OP tactic and Iām okay with that (see previous paragraph).
Those worm tunnels are out of hand. It felt like a later Souls game would pack monsters in there, but this one is content to have just a horribly confusing maze.
My router seems to have died, so I played today using my phone as a hotspot, and actually managed to get a few invasions going. I died every single time, but at least one of the hosts was kind enough to give me a Pure Darkmoonstone.
I beat Maiden Astraea, Penetrator, and Old King Allant all yesterday afternoon. That is an exquisite run of bosses. Saving Maiden Astraea for what will probably be the third-to-last boss on most peopleās first playthroughs is a brilliant move for the tone of the game.
Still sad I couldnāt get summoned or summon anyone else at any point. I couldnāt even summon for Old King Allant, but that ended up being a fine thing because I beat him on my second try and it was an exhilaratingly good fight. I didnāt feel like I was cheesing him. I just played the best Demonās Souls of my life.
And here this run came to an end. This time I successfully got through it all without using or even memorizing a single spell or miracle. Demonās is a wonderful game, and I love it as much if not more than any of its successors. I was really impressed this time out by the boss fights and how many of them are just really smart, tense, fights with opponents slightly larger than yourself.
Maybe the most difficult stretch of the entire game for me was the black phantom mindflayers on the stairs up to Old Monk. But then I got my shit together and figured out how to exploit their behavior.
If I have one big complaint about the gameās structure as a whole, itās probably actually that the game is so bloody stingy with basic upgrade materials. I didnāt want to farm the few places where low-level materials drop with any frequency, especially since they are still relatively rare there. If farming was more reliable, I mightāve been game. As a result, the only weapons I ever really upgraded were my starting dagger and my bow. They served me well, but the lack of easy upgrade material availability discouraged me from experimenting (I did, however, collect hordes of upgrade materials for weapons I didnāt use).
