Demon's Souls January/February Book Club

Honestly I have no idea how intentional it is. I said this on a podcast once, but one of the reasons Demon’s and Dark have such good VA is probably because there are no conversations, just monologues; and these are half-remembered dreamscapes that are improved, not harmed, by oddity and dissociation - so each actor has an easier job, since they don’t need to act off of anybody or anything else. Each line is a tiny jewel.

I feel like the amount of conent is pretty similar to Dark Souls. and even though there are way less enemey types: general enemy encounters feel like they are used to better effect. Such that, I was really surprised to hear exactly how much less enemy variety there is.

there was server maintenance today and i’m hearing that it apparently fixed things for people

Glad there’s almost two weeks left. I’ve been too wrapped up in material farming and running around Kamurocho.

My final Boletarian Tour (with active phantoms)…Black Eye Stone baby!

Server maintenance two weeks before shutdown, is kinda hilarious. So the world might be mended.

i need to finish this

I still have not gotten across the final stretch of the 1-2 bridge. Those archers and that knight are tricky without space to back up and draw them out.

Try 1-2 bridge in pure black world tendency!

I love that bridge.

1-2 tricks you into thinking you’re in more danger than you are. Once you’re up in front of the archers and able to hit them, you’re safe from the dragon. Watch for where the debris and dead soldiers stop.

That bridge does a lot with visual cues. Some of the danger zones are a little off though, The third leg starts half way across that wagon rather than on the far side of it. Took me two deaths to figure that out.

when in doubt, just run for it

You think your’e safe, and then that last wisp of flame licks you’re naked back.

Finished 1-2. Finally.

the appearances of all the armors can be found here but obv spoilers for people not endgame yet

So the last time I played this game, before my PS3 burnt out, i made my target SL 50. I don’t remember the build exactly, but I recreated the build as close as i could here:

https://mugenmonkey.com/demonssouls/6223 (edit: whoops fixed the build slightly)

The Blessed Mace is easily obtainable and you can at least upgrade it to +4 without tooooo much trouble. Istarelle’s a pain to get but optional really, you can use Talisman of God if you don’t have the other Talisman. (which is honestly preferable if you want to use WoG too)

also: yes, you can plan builds on this site: https://mugenmonkey.com/demonssouls

heck while I’m here.

https://mugenmonkey.com/demonssouls/6224 this, or something like it, was my favorite ‘endgame’ build for pvp or pve or whatnot. It’s a looooot stronger than it looks. Crescent Kilij is amazing.

edit: on a side note, there’s basically no reason to make dude characters because Old Raggedy, Binded Set, and Silver Bracelets are all way too good to pass up. … unless you’re doing a Northern Regalia build, because it works sooooo well with the Ancient King’s armor, which is male only.

i make all lady characters because i just do that anyway and most of them ended up wearing binded cross and silver bracelets. You can get the binded cross really early if you’re willing to kill the 1-2 dragon right after beating tower knight. (Annoying but easy with arrows, boring but easier with poison cloud)

Kind of weird that they have gendered armor in this one, i’m glad they ditched that.

My favorite build in this game is a magic knight (or spellsword i guess) using the blueblood sword and light weapon + warding. You can shred anything apart and tank any damage while your spells are up, but you’re fragile enough that you have to frantically run around looking for an opening to recast when they’re down, it’s a lot of fun.

Blueblood Sword is one of those weapons I have really mixed opinions on. It has a lot going for it: Range, 2h R1 combo of death, the only(iirc?) buffable magic weapon. The Luck scaling is an… interesting choice, kinda makes you commit to the weapon. The high stat requirements generally make it hard for me to recommend unless you’re going for an “equips all the things” build anyway. Which is fine if you’re not playing on a budget!

A fun PvP invasion build, though: Blueblood (base 18 stats), primarily magic stat, Light Weapon, Hidden Soul, Graverobber’s Ring, Foe’s Ring, Insanity Catalyst/Talisman of Beasts. Since Hidden Soul and Graverobber’s Ring stack in multiplayer, the host/phantoms/BPs literally cannot see you until you’re about 10 feet away from them. Just jog up and R1 combo them to death for fun, hit and run strats all day. Don’t even need Cling Ring since you are not going to be trying to slug it out.

(going incognito that way is a fun strat in pvp in general; but please remember that other players can see your auras even if you are out of range, so don’t wear or cast anything that gives you an extra aura effect on your character)

The only real benefit to dude characters is Ancient King’s armor set, which is a step or two below Brushwood but with no stamina regeneration penalties. It is, however, incredibly ugly. Binded Cross is generally more worth it for most builds.
