yeah I was recalling there’s one episode where the crew goes on vacation and riker and troi Hang Out a lot and kiss and stuff and it’s not made a big deal out of , so you start to go “wait a minute have they been doing this the whole time and it’s just not on screen??”
idk I think it’s not really head canon and that you just have the right read of the writing. I feel like they establish it pretty well even from the first episode it’s clear they have some on and off thing going on. Riker and her get married in the movies right but there like isn’t a single time they fight about fucking other people once in the entire show. The way they’re always calling each other betazed shit makes it seem like they value their relationship above all the other ones.
One dimension of it is that they’re currently serving as officers on the same ship, so they feel they have to maintain a professional distance. So you can really feel they’re longing for each other the whole time (especially Riker; Troi seems like she could kind of take it or leave it sometimes). I guess that’d be why they were being romantic on vacation. They’re not on duty.
They are definitely maintaining an open relationship during this time (and maybe always?). I like the head canon that humanity has evolved past monogamy.
I immediately associated the Bajoran resistance with Palestinians, though I think they’re suppose to be more like the IRA or the French resistance or something.
I could never get too invested in the Maquis stuff, because it registers as very grey to me. First off, do we know how long the Federation colonials were on those planets? Is it supposed to be multiple generations or, like, less than one generation? It always felt to me like they were there for, like, <20 years prior to the treaty, and it’s like…colonists being kicked off their farm (and compensated, I think?) less than a generation after settling is very very very different from someone being ethnically cleansed from the multigenerational homeland where they grew up.
(I just did a little research on this, and it seems like it’s not really sketched out, but I only see references to colonists being on those planets within 20 years–feel free to do more research and correct me.)
That said, the Federation’s desire to stamp out the Maquis always felt needlessly heavy-handed. Like they’re the exact kind of group that a government can say, “Whaddaya want me to do? They’re illegal. We don’t support them. They’re your problem.” I don’t buy that their actions could start a war.
And with Sisko’s weird vendetta, I don’t think you’re even supposed to agree with him.
So, it’s like, I side with the Maquis more than the the Federation, but ultimately don’t care that much.
(the revival serieses might be better than the mediocre 7 and dogshit 8, but it’s so depressing seeing them all so old, and everything looks so cheap in a bad way, as opposed to cheap in a good way like 1-3)
There’s some decent scripts in the revival stuff but yeah there’s definitely a nadir. If we’re talkin only the first 6 I think it beats TNG overall but then I’m just cherry picking.
Just watched Rescue 911 for like 2 hours thanks to this post and lemme tell ya: it’s fucking bad ass, especially the one where those kids go to town on a deck with a machete
