I’m so happy I correctly surmised Firefly was the ideal troll option. I can just absorb TV from the noosphere!
Whenever Firefly comes up, I proudly declare that I watched it every Friday on its original run and never really cared for it. I preferred John Doe, which came on after it and was about a man who knows literally everything except…his own identity?! So he uses that ability to solve crimes.
It starred the in prison brother from prison break.
I won’t be surprised if DS9 wins, but if TNG isn’t second that seems like a bit of an upset.
Though I guess if DS9 wins it follows to have Farscape second.
ds9 10
babylon5 10
red dwarf 9
lexx 9
tng 8
farscape 7
Deep Space 9 - 10 pts
NExt Generation- 7 points
Voyager- 9 points
Lower Decks- 5 points
Sealab 2021 - 6 points
I watched every episode of John Doe on broadcast but didn’t fuck with that space cowboy show at all. I’ve only seen the movie and I had no idea what was happening in it.
If I did this list I’ve have to parse out the different seasons of SeaQuest
of those i’ve seen a fair bit of (never finished ds9)
- Farscape — 9
- Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) — 8.5
- Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993) — 7.5
- Red Dwarf (1988) — 6
- Battlestar Galactica (2004) — 6
- poop
- Firefly
been meaning to catch The Expanse and Stargate SG1 (for those sweet Farscape tie-ins)
Expanse rocks hard but it is def a Cowboy Bebop more than a Star Trek
- Babylon 5 (1994) - 10
- Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) - 9
- The Expanse (2015) - 8
- Farscape - 7
- Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993) - 7
- Red Dwarf (1988) - 6
- Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022) - 5
- Battlestar Galactica (2004) - 5
- Stargate SG1 (1999) - 4
- Seaquest - 2
The rest are like… overall…
Also I should note that Seaquest sucks real bad but I just think its neat
oh I meant to post about this in your vexillology thread but I’m stoned right now and don’t feel like looking it up
I love the design of the peacekeeper flag, I love that its a modification of lissitzky’s classic lithograph, Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge
Like, what a way to convey the totalizing militarism AND the futurism of peacekeeper society, using decontextualized war propaganda as their flag
More flags should take inspiration from suprematist art imo. The strange angles do so much to counteract the anesthesia of basic shapes
yeah i always get a kick out of this as well
farscape is such an intentionally weird collection of cultural artifacts, even ignoring the fact crichton is constantly calling aliens “sparky” “buckwheat” “pip” “sputnik” etc
WTF, is Farscape good? This is a real revelation for me, because last weekend I was stoned off my ass and turned on the Farscape channel on Pluto TV knowing nothing about the show, only to see a fucked up albino bondage guy staring at a big glowing tube and just shrieking, followed by a dorky looking ultra-2000’s guy making dumb jokes to a huge guy who looked like a knockoff Klingon with a big weird 2D nose made of construction paper. You all are making this show sound great though.
the albino bondage guy has some of the best line reads in TV history
I strongly suspect that my thinking that TNG and DS9 are equally good is extremely representative of my personality in that I think utopianism and anti-utopianism are actually not that far apart if they are delivered with the same tone and the same spirit. this is why in my Disco Elysium ending I got called out for somewhat incoherently maxing out my “liberal hustle” and my desire to liquidate the ruling class, and why I think de Blasio was a great politician despite like everyone thinking he was a doofus for trying to please both left and liberal constituencies.
I just think TNG is a far cozier watch than DS9, I have a certain affection for its doofy utopianism. also I think being utopian is in certain ways more radical than reflexively problematizing every utopia. it is in some ways more radical to believe that violence, war, greed, etc are not simply ‘human nature’ but instead are societally constructed paradigms which can be overcome
all the online marxists love DS9 but my contrarian(?) take is that it’s a deeply liberal show. i don’t remember why i came up with that take tho, i’ll have to take a day or two and recall my argument. something about how it treats the bajoran insurgency, their religion, and the cardassian state
ds9 is a show you pay attention to tng is a show you put on in the background after the first watch but I love them both
it’s got muppets and space horny and practical effects and pregnant spaceships and farting but I only actually enjoyed the first two seasons. there’s lots of great moments later but I can only handle EVERYONE’S GONE SPACE CRAZY AND IS HALLUCINATING so many times. it’s worth giving a shot tho
I like thinking about red dwarf jokes more than I like thinking about any of these shows but the laugh track makes it really hard to recommend
