it’ll be on PC this time next year latest
I still haven’t played the first game in full but have sat with a friend irl and other streamers to watch bits and pieces and I’m still not sure I have found a way to articulate the dissonance I feel about DS as either a product or an Artistic Exercise. I think the biggest sticking point is how it barely feels like a game while I do have some interest in the vibe of the world and gameplay pitch/loop but all the minutia around it feels like it wants me to forget about all that and just see how many Faces they can get on the screen. Whenever I’m discussing the game I rarely call the characters by their names and opt for the Actors names instead. My closest comparison is how Yakuza/LaD has some film actors stand in as characters but Kiryu and Majima being original creations are able to stand on their own and have a unique identity without any outside association from their medium. If you try to say Sam Porter to me my mind is just going to autocorrect to Norman Reedus. This argument can be adequately picked apart when talking about other celebrity tie ins in games and seeing actors in other roles but something about Death Stranding just makes it catch and stick abrasively in my mind that is trying to approach it like a game but my mind can only see it as a weird platform of ideas barely strung together by a mans love of another medium. This is less a judgement of it being good or bad but something about it just doesn’t feel like its being delivered properly.
I got bored of Death Stranding and so I hope the new one is different.
Death Stranding 2 will have a photo mode where you can take photos of the actors, out of character, on the sets. Some amount of this is intentional.
That said, traversal of the world is given as much importance in the balancing of the experience as the performances. They took the work they’d done on Phantom Pain, figured they were Done with combat, and worked on building up their traversal design so it was comparable to the work they did on combat. And then they left all the combat design in there to surprise you with it every 4 hours. It’s also the next evolution of the RE4 attaché case, because now enemies can knock items out of it.
I don’t think I can wait for the pc release
Personally I have no interest in Kojima returning to MGS characters or storylines, but i can appreciate the theatricality of Kojima making a game where Snake walks out of a graveyard as fireworks go off.
I think the soul of Death Stranding is its hot tub. For the game to make sense you have to be really good at imaging removing sweaty hiking boots, cold wind, and hot sore muscles. Everything else is just there to get you to the hot tub, to justify the game’s existance or to get kojima into parties.
DS2 set in Australia, feat. a Caorline Polachek song
this is maybe as close as i get to wishing i had contemporary gaming hardware. i wonder if it’ll get into the vassal state nature of the other anglo settler colonies to the US
oh my GOD
HOLY SHIT WHY DIDNT I THINK OF THIS.
It was also a book.
I have a copy of the book I found in a free library, i should read it huh
Hey Kojima could you please NOT predict a nuclear war, thank you.
i think i have more respect for Qualley’s performance here than in The Substance lol. she’s really going all out
i think qualley is a fantastic actor who is almost never in anything good.
fwiw i like death stranding, but her role is full of the worst of kojima… but i still love it.
comparing my feelings about Upcoming Game: Death Stranding 2 with my feelings about nearly any other game before it released: i guess DS1 is basically my favorite game ever?
