Hey I like both of these games (for pretty similar reasons)! I think they’re going for very similar things in broad strokes, but are pretty different in the details and how they achieve it.

Yeah this is truly a bad/superficial take, because regardless of what you think about either, the only similarity seems to be they’re ā€œweirdā€.

Death Stranding’s story has almost been painfully straightforward so far. Kojima sure does love explaining shit.

It seems like lots of people are being asked or at least trying to answer the question ā€œshould you buy this gameā€.

idk what to say or how people will convince you beyond what you’ve already seen but I’ve never seen such vitrol for a chillout game since Gone Home and much of it comes from journalists this time.

These are of course the lowest scores: the overall Metacritic is an 84. But some people are really mad lol.

the critical reception seems pretty divided, even a lot of outlets giving it positive reviews do so with heavy caveats. gamers seem to hate it in larger proportions but it’s always hard to tell how much of that is the usual extremely annoying vocal minority that is peculiar to ā€œgamersā€

Critical response I’ve seen seems to mostly fall into either ā€œIt’s a glorious mess, I love itā€ and ā€œIt’s a messā€

I don’t think people are necessarily reacting to the number of people that dislike the game, but rather how vehemently opposed the dissenters are. I popped into a few Twitch streams a couple days ago and there were always a couple people in chat that were just pissed that this game even existed.

I do think if you approach the game with a certain mindset it can appear as an insincere joke. Why would someone make a game where the simple act of moving is hard and arduous? Why are some sections so hard and others trivialized not by what you do as a player, but by the work of others? Why do all the characters have names that describe them extremely literally? Why is the writing all over the place and simultaneously hamfisted and surreal and obvious?

I think it’s easier to ignore a game that fits neatly into a genre; you could say ā€œI don’t like JRPGsā€ and categorically dismiss them. But when confronted with a game by a well-known designer which is hard to describe in one phrase, maybe you have a harder time dismissing it out of hand. The cognitive dissonance of many people seemingly enjoying what you hate (a game that seems actively mean-spirited and counter to what you think a game should be) is just too much.

imo the problem isn’t that some people hate it and some people love it, it’s that, like with virtually every kojima game, the vitriol is directed at the most interesting and compelling dimensions and the loudest sycophantic critical praise is directed at what range from the generally uninteresting or peripheral/superficial aspects of his work to serious, recurring, dire failings. i still have about 15 hours to go to finish DS and i’ll have to think about this lots but tbh i think his positive press is a bigger problem than the negative, which mostly reiterates all the things i love about his games and frames them as malevolent anti-player mortal sins or whatever.

yeah the things people loudly like about Kojima games are often the least interesting things, and unsurprisingly when he makes a game that pushes the most interesting things about his work to the forefront there’s a loud contingent upset about that

uh gimme like two weeks i’m writing a review/article for a site and will get much more granular/don’t really want to talk about it much until i can think about it in the context of the whole (i’ll post about it more once i’m done in 2 or 3 days though)

i know some peoole who are all upset about how it’s Boring because all you do is haul shit around but having every piece of cargo on your body and how that affects you and your movement just seems like him leaning into his obsession with objects and bodies so hard and that’s way more interesting to me than THE SHOOTING FEELS GOOD BABY AWOOOO!!! or whatever people liked about mgs5. i never gave a shit about the rich character of solid snake or whatever, i was always more interested in the things kojima was clearly obsessed with (besides his hangups about the dreaded FEMALE) anyway. his games have always felt like weird amalgamations of whatever topic he’s really into when he’s making it plus the long-standing obsessions with Objects (calorie-mate, lovingly rendered monster energy) and MEN (specifically their bodies and their relationships with each other) and that’s why they’re interesting to me, especially next to a lot of their contemporaries. theres just so much of him in them sincerely and the enterprise is just so novel that i cant help but appreciate it, like watching a neil breen film. the problem you run into is that for a lot of people his work is so novel that its made him above reproach, which is why you see so many reviews that are like ā€œi hated every moment i spent with this game but kojima has done it again!ā€ which is just too fucking cynical even for me

My biggest consistent complaint with Walking Simulators has been mechanical triviality so solving that just makes this entire project more attractive
