Weāre dangerously close to peak Kojima. Which I thought we had already passed like twice now. But the man just canāt stop. Itās who he is. This is what he does. I love him.

Am I the only person who thinks Kojima games arenāt really that weird? He just builds ~the mystery~ before release and then it all turns out to be normal fantasy/sci-fi shit the moment you actually get your hands on the game.
Iām gonna play Dead Rising Death Stranding for sure, and probably enjoy it, I just donāt really understand the cultish devotion people have to calling his games weird.

I think we had this discussion before but imo itās more that he has (or had) a talent for actually synthesizing broad inspiration outside of videogames and getting enough corporate money behind something that was enjoyably overwritten and vague enough to feel like it was both tapping into the zeitgeist and not taking itself too seriously
like, there could be a dozen kojimas easy, but there arenāt
and anyone who can consume all that military porn and still, rather than emulate it, process it into something admirably weird which still has something to say to the military porn is basically a treasure, which is true of all especially dumb mass market stuff

He/the team heās a part of is also world-class at getting large monolithic teams to implement one-off clever ideas, and occasionally (never bettered than in MGSVās guilty warlord sim) one of the best at wrapping a game narrative around player action.

I get what youāre saying, like itās kind of annoying how the public reaction is just like ālmao wtfā when itās not that crazy but I do think kojima has a talent for expressing idiosyncratic ideas in his work that go beyond standard fantasy/sci-fi tropes or whatever.
I think itās cool that no matter what ridiculous elements kojima includes itās never really just a ālol so randomā kind of move, like, it comes from a genuine desire to incorporate whatever themes or whatever.
I think you could certainly argue the way that kojima often goes to silly lengths to insert these themes is pretty hacky. but, thatās kind of why I like himā¦
