So, wait. Are you interpreting the Nameless King as Ornstein? I thought all of the signs pointed to him being the disowned son of Gwyn. Unless you weren’t being literal.
the other day a gallery on Imgur (the neocon liberal cesspit of the internet) of fan-proposed dark souls enemies made it to the front page and was highly rated and all of them are awful: highlights
BONFIRE MIMIC
CORPSE MIMIC
LADDER MIMIC
WHEEL TAURUS DEMON I wish I was making that up
you know for all the inevitable writers that get told “there are too many dark souls articles on the internet” by websites I still think nobody really understands these games jesus Christ
Pretty sure those are meant to be jokes.
I will confess to slashing one or two bonfires in this game, though.
a bonfire mimic would’ve made me very happy
nameless king apparently drops Ornstein’s gear which has a reference to him having been his trainer? Something dumb and lore-y like that
the cutscene after 1st form it’s very reminiscent of S&O, and spear and armour are there… I don’t really care about things much tho, upon first encounter I internalized nameless king as Goku
it’s pretty likely this turns into a skeleton no?
I don’t see any resemblance between the armors, except some gold coloration. Nameless King’s outfit, right down to the crown he’s wearing, seems to be pretty clearly modeled on Gwyn’s articles. Figured the spear was a reference to the sunlight altar statue’s spear.
Agree with this 100% of course is pretty clear, I meant they’re there physically, Ornstein spear is against the grate opposite to the bell, the armour is along the columns, accessible after defeating him.
he’s the model for the smashed sunlight altars too, right
he’s the og sunbro
I wish it turns into a regular mimic at the top
it being a skeleton reminds me of something that would be in MedEvil, and that’s basically what dark souls is anyway right
Finally advanced one of my “alts” past the point where my “main” stalled. Pyromancer with Chaos Astora Greatsword (the INT/FTH scaling on this thing is insane!). Stuck on Yhorn right now, already beat Pontiff.
Pontiff wasn’t so bad, mostly just kind of a diceroll to get a good 2nd parry after they give you the 1st one for free. His shadow clone wasn’t too bad either, I just hate how it would occasionally tank a Chaos Bed Vestiges hit for Pontiff because I couldn’t quite tell who was standing in front. He’s the only boss I actually wanted to parry on so far, because beating him the honest way (fastroll) seemed more long, tedious, and error-prone than I was willing to put up with.
Yhorn…ugh. I hate his gimmick so much more than Pontiff. Went out of my way to
finish Siegward’s questline so that I’d have his help in the fight, but I got him killed on pratfalls trying to bum rush the Storm Ruler without knowing what the boss’s tells were. And all that after I spent hours running in circles (while watching TV with my sister) trying to find out how to get to the door to his cell.
So no easy mode jolly-cooperation Yhorn for me, now it’s just charge Storm Ruler, stance R2, recharge, repeat, roll some attacks in between.I’d honestly complain less about this gimmick if holding L2 all the damn time wasn’t annihilating my wrist. (I play on an aging 360 wired pad.) I’ll probably get him down today, but boy is this tedious.
They demoted the gargoyles to regular enemies, I see. Sorry, guys. I guess From finally restructured to reflect what chumps you guys are.
I wasn’t even aware he could die in that fight! I just watched as he won the whole thing for me (I didn’t even notice the weapon on the throne until afterward) and I drew some aggro for him every now and then.
That was, apparently, my critical error. I wasn’t sure about all the Internet talk about “just let Siegward solo him lol”, so I decided to grab the Storm Ruler (which I knew about from reading the wiki/watching a speed run) and help out.
First attempt, Yhorn got me with an overhead chop before I even got the sword. I underestimated his reach/run speed and thought I could just run right past him.
Second time, I made it there, Siegward was still alive, I watched him fight for a couple seconds while I fumbled to equip the Storm Ruler and learn how it worked. I didn’t see whether or not Yhorn killed him, though he definitely hit Siegward at least once.
I get hit by some attack (probably the overhead chop again, since it bodies reckless stance R2 startup), run back for attempt #3, and there’s Siegward’s equipment, lootable. “Easy mode”, my ass.
To add insult to injury, the run back to the fog gate from the Profaned Capital bonfire is also kinda troll-y. It’s, like, 50-50 whether or not the first fireball from the Olympic flame tracks you well enough to hit you. You’ll live through the hit, but the stagger can throw off your run timing well enough to possibly get hit by another fireball & die (assuming you don’t stop to chug an Estus first, which I think would just dig your hole deeper) or maybe the gargoyle trolls you and actually hits you with his flying downward thrust which normally hits air. I gotta watch speedruns again and see what I might be able to do to manipulate the tracking in my favor.
My strategy for this area was to generally just avoid everything. Didn’t fight any of the enemies and just ran straight to the boss. Very few things in the area attack you and the ones that do can be ignored if you sprint past them. At the same time, would spend all your souls ahead of time and just sort of expect to die a few times from stray junk while getting used to the boss sprint. I’ve seen people doing playthroughs where they defeated that boss without help or the Storm Ruler, which is the craziness I attempted a couple times before realizing the weapon was there (would not have realized it were it not for me inviting other players though). The corridor before the boss is also completely safe - none of the enemies can get in there, and it’s a good place to recruit help.
I spend my souls quick as I can from bosses anyway. I actually go out of my way to avoid summoning phantoms, I still find most bosses are easier when I’m the only aggro target.
And Yhorn wasn’t too hard (beat him about an hour and a half ago) once I started playing a bit less risky (thought I could “meaty” him with Storm Ruler R2 from a headshot stagger, but his AI is checking your stamina to see whether or not you can roll, and if so he’ll do his lunge punch). Started attacking him only on reaction to whiffs, unless it’s the opening contact when you first walk in the door. Not hard, just tedious. Mostly I was just pissed I poured all that work into Siegward for such an anticlimax. NPCs – not even once.
I try not to be Embered right now anyway because quite honestly with the whole Malcom Reynalds thing going on, I’m paranoid of getting softbanned trolled by hackers. The only time I really do multiplayer in this game is to put my summon sign down to co-op and farm souls, and I’m kinda lukewarm on that anyway. I just don’t really care about multiplayer in this game.
Right now I’m on Aldrich and I’m taking a break. Since I have a Chaos weapon I do a lot of damage, and most of his attacks haven’t trolled me too hard except that damn Unlimited Hidden Blade Missile Works attack on phase 2. I learned that if I were farther away from him, I could run out the effect timer longer, but that means I also have to keep watching him for Soul Spears and Homing Soul Masses and the like. And my roll timing isn’t quite down on the last parts of that attack, either – I usually get clipped by 1 or two arrows after evading the 1st cycle cleanly. I have fastroll so I was initially rolling too fast, slowed it down when I realized they probably designed that attack more with mid roll in mind.
Yeah, this boss sucked the first time I did it. Died so many times to arrow-y death tracker and the first run through I was going shieldless, which was infuriating. I couldn’t figure out how to handle the fight solo and eventually got an NPC phantom (since their HP is absurd compared to their level) and they died to one hit of that attack. Everything else about that boss seemed reasonable but I hate that ability. Anything with tracking that powerful shouldn’t be a boss attack.
I agree with the Siegward assessment, it was pretty disappointing as a quest. Only the end of the Yoel questline had any impact on me, and my response was mostly one of confusion rather than understanding why this is an appropriate ritual practice (only, in a very limited way, makes sense given the affiliation with the Abyss).
I am currently on the caution thing so I can’t honestly blame you about worrying wrt the online right now. I deleted my old saves, still have the complaint and have no idea if it will ever be fixed. I guess unless it says “You Have Been Penalized”, online still functions normally, from what I can tell. I’ve only met three hackers (that were obvious) at this point, but they were definitely hackers. (One was infinite health, one was invisible, one was wearing way too much and seemed to have infinite stamina). Two of them were during co-op though - was weird to see Sunlight helpers hacking so egregiously. There was also one where I simply wasn’t sure if they were a hacker - they seemed to be controlling three characters, as they were all acting in unison (and doing some weird BDSM thing - should’ve taken screenshots but I didn’t). It seemed odd that people could do something like what they were doing in unison, but there were also times where they acted independently so I had no real idea about whether or not they were hacking or just role-playing.
YHORM
Thank you for spelling Aldrich correctly though
100 hours with the game have been passively summoned 4 times .
If your talking about blue sentinels, you where summoned 4 more times than most people (and me), conglaturation!!.
Aldrich was easy for me, only good thing of being a wizard is the pyromancy. for the arrow attack in cinder mode you just have to get away from him when the scenario goes black, this attack begin where he’s standing, when he launch the attack, run, if the attack can damage you roll like a blue hedghog.
this boss was dissapointing it wasn’t a morbid fatman instead of a naga, but instead of half man and half serpent, it’s half man and half shit.
I’m in the final dude, it’s not that hard but I can’t pull it off. I know I can do it today because i know how to deal with certain thing, it’s a shit his cinder mode can insta-kill me.
I beat Aldrich via rushdown. Just got in his face and hacked his wormy ass to bits with my Chaos Astora Greatsword +7 (now +8, I need more Chunks). Still got clipped by 1-2 arrows during Unlimited Blade Works, but learned the spacing/timing not to get chipped out by Homing Soul Masses while avoiding the arrow wall. The only thing I’m really getting used to with that weapon is less how slow it is and more how it can miss on bosses with weird posture (and thus hittable regions). I missed my 2nd R1 on Aldrich sometimes just by being at slightly too weird an angle next to his stupid wormy butt.
Currently stalled on Oceiros cause I got to his boss door first. (Haven’t tried suicide running past those dragons on the roof yet. 1st phase isn’t too bad, it’s his charge move in 2nd phase that’s basically unannounced that keeps dropping me in 1 hit. (I hear there’s an audio cue, but I had my headphones off & was watching TV while I tried him. I watched his body carefully for a visual tell but the bow he does seems way too subtle to rely on. Nowhere near as quick & easy to read as something like Quelaag hugging her spider.) Also whenever he mentions Ocelotte, I can’t help hearing “Ocelot”. Is he gonna go “You’re pretty good” when I kill him?
