heās right, riverdale needs to step up next season and have an episode where dr curdle jr dissects archie and finds out heās more plant than man,
riverdale scene report: not as into the new 1950s themed season, who knew that having a bunch of episodes where archie and the gang confront the legacy of emmett tillās murder (seriously) would be kind of a bummer, standouts so far
- finding an excuse to do a record scratch reaction sound effect in every episode bc itās the 50s
- toni introducing cheryl to lesbianism by giving her a copy of āthe cost of pepperā
it took them forever to bring back reggie this season too BUT the last episode where itās him and archie having extreme sexual tension over the right to drive archieās 1920s ass car was p good and i do think itās funny that it took this show seven seasons, the destruction of the world by a comet and a whole alternate universe to finally work back around to the point where theyāre doing that kind of archie comics non-plot. ALSO: i will forgive everything else about the new series if the conclusion to the fangs fogerty musical career arc turns out to be him dying in the same plane crash as buddy holly and the big bopper
the tales from the crypt episode was pretty good but otherwise I have been struggling with this season
i guess this is officially Over now but no spoilers bc iām still five episodes from the endā¦ after managing to keep up with this thing for this long theyāre really testing me, the musical episode followed by the beauty pageant one is like the cw equivalent of a megaman boss rush. it was soo funny that there was a whole episode about Acknowledging Ethelās Beauty when for the whole show up til now her entire character has been āhomely / sometimes homicidally insane (as result of being homely??)ā. every moment i watch this show now iām just going AH OOH AH OOH ARGHH AHH like doomguy suffering lava tick damage. theres a part where shes kneeling at bettys feet fixing her dress like a little serf girl while weeping and saying āI WONT GET ANY TEARS ON YOUR DRESSā and i was just picturing john waters out of frame flinching and going listen its a little much.
the only character i like now is evelyn bc i do sincerely respect and appreciate the decision to bring back that actress and treat her as just a regular highschooler now even though she was originally meant to be an adult woman posing as a teen to recruit them into the organ cult. now shes just standing around like this in random background shots and it kind of rules. my wife kept yelling āget back to the hilary clinton biopicā. at least she doesnt talk like an ai trained on teen vogue
I actually had to bail on season 7. I couldnāt believe it. I got this far and I couldnāt get it over the line. they did this to see how much of their idiotically loyal audience they could shed, I swear
itās really crazy like it was always bad but i think i was really underrating the level of genius it took to be so consistently good-bad now that itās so plainly bad-bad. like the 1950s thing really put them in some kind of weird feedback loop where theyāre stuck bouncing back and forth between their two modes of extreme pastiche and cornball discourse wins and it just sort of cancels out. seeing the writers earnestly critique the crazed Grease style setting that they devised as an excuse for throwback musical numbers feels like seeing a chicken attacking its own reflection in a mirror
but i live in hopeā¦ ways they can salvage the season in the eps i havent watched yet:
archie gets attacked by a bear again
fangs dies in the richie valens crash ā still hoping on this one
Immortal Adult Baby Anthony returns
they escape the time portal and end up dying in 9/11 like the ending of Remember Me
seems like a good time to watch this

yeah thatās a great example of how this showās bonkers pastiche really does have its own identity but itās strange enough that most people canāt pin it down
