honestly if they just graphically exploited men too iâd chalk it up to âdystopian hellworldâ but the only bad ends for men in this are âkilled by gangoonsâ and âiâm a psychotic walking tank because military traumaâ
also adding a part where you have to carry a naked guy and his hog flops around in front of the first person camera like itâs haunted
it really is stunning how you just find men machinegunned down or whatever but itâs always the gals you find with concrete shoes naked at the bottom of a river, or literally ripped apart on the operating table, or sex trafficked, or insert the other hundreds of violent ways they came up with for how a woman should be dispatched presumably in the same meeting where they came up with the billion variations of how you get called a stupid cunt and that squirting blood line
Also I forgot to mention it but itâs so typical of this game to have âsuspected organized crime activityâ located on martin luther king boulevard but then have you show up and murder the catholic latino gang because theyâve heard thereâs crime on mlk in american cities but are too stupid to even do cultural tourism of our racism right. i mean thatâs also why every single gang you have repeated interactions with is extremely Ethnic as well lol. literally every single attempt at actual social commentary fucking fails because they have no idea what america is like, itâs amazing, no wonder they made the dev team actually move here before they were allowed to make a sequel
i played a bit of the demo months ago (before the re-re-relaunch this past month) and while it wasnât bad it just didnât really convince me i needed to keep playing. is there anything worth seeing here, besides the graphics?
i might just wait until the game is $12 like i did with The Witcher 3 when all its expansions went on sale for PS4
also i do keep playing this because despite being made by dudes whose only media habits are liveleak uploads and old andrew dice clay bits, it does meat and potatoes of the whole first person immersive rpg thing real real well, particularly NPC animations and moment to moment combat (it gets more fun as you cyber up, i never use guns and just fly around with a sword and a missile cannon in my arm blocking bullets like an anime protagonist) and iâm shamelessly entertained by keanuâs performance along with a lot of the other VAs. the VA and animation brings a real emotional intimacy that a lot of games in this genre lack
i donât think i would recommend it to anyone because of the tacky slime radiating from every part of it but i do have a weakness for a game where quietly riding in a car for 10 minutes while having small talk with somebody on the way to a job feels real, or how i actually legitimately got upset when my V told a bleeding Jackie not to close his eyes and hang on and he subtly sunk back into the seat, eyes still open as he went
it is truly repulsive and compelling in equal measure
The pull is probably the graphics, stories, and exploration. At least it is for me. The combat isnât super exciting or complex. It is basically the same exact experience as Witcher 3 but more fun to explore imo because a city is intrinsically more packed with stuff and spaces than fields and fields.
the combat is much much better this way than any other way â both the stealth and the guns are not nearly as fun (or particularly close to being as top-of-class as theyâd need to be to sell the experience) imo
I feel the combat is duller than The Witcher (a low bar) & the first person perspective and larger contiguous space exacerbates the hollowness of interstitial spaces much more heavily than Witcherâs emphasis on third person, RPG-style built-out towns w/ side quests on side roads.
The custom character stuff to me weakens the worldâs definition. V rarely has consistent characterization between interactions and the dialogue choice funnel feels restrictive. Understanding the world through itâs relationship to my character feels not at all the priority and reading/hearing large lore dumps via text file or blue dialogue options does.
The game looks nice & there are moments where I appreciate it looking nice, especially when the dynamic scripting is working in conjunction with me just doing a Telltale VN, but everything (including the writing) is working much more heavily against those moments of coherence than in The Witcher, which was at least content to imagine a little Polish paradise where they can be openly confused by pocs and women as inscrutable elves and tricky witches.
i guess i felt like the dialogue trees i experienced in Witcher 3 felt more-immediately immersive and open to exploration, whereas what i played of 2077 felt like i was on rails the entire time. i must have put in about 3-5 hours. does that more-naturally open up?
2077 is an open world Deus Ex Human Revolution bloated out into an 80 hour game, in every direction. Iâd also consider it better than HR overall, despite the lack of focus, because at least the writing isnât just single minded reverence of the license, like HRâs.
not really, youâre playing a specific person who has a very cynical and burned out view of the world around them who is quickly having their personality overwritten by another. you canât really be anyone other than a teched-out desperate crook but you can be a crook with a heart of gold or a nihilistic operator. V has very little patience due to the ticking time bomb and is incredibly direct with everyone which if you are more of a Diplomat might bother you.
i usually play good guys in these sorts of games so iâm finding it refreshing to be forced into more practical cutthroat mindset and being mean in this is a lot more fun than usual because youâre like, intimidating gangoons and corpos not little old ladies who need you to get their cat out the tree or whatever
the roleplaying is more around interpersonal interactions and how you relate to johnny/keanu, the guy overwriting your consciousness, and play style. the maps have a lot of leeway for quiet and loud approaches, plenty of aerial approaches if you spec into the double jump, and the whole layer of tech magic if you want it (i removed my cyberdeck for anime powers and do my hacking with a throwing axe)
Deus Ex is a good comparison.
strongly disagree re: VA, girl V is one of the better performances iâve heard in a while. the way she cracks up anytime jackie comes up gets me every time
I think they are well done performances, itâs really just the characterization. I agree physical, the stuff with Jackie and V are really good in subtle ways. I donât think that I will ever love playing as a voiced first-person perspective character, for whatever reason.
