Started watching the rip that’s on Karagarga anyway and now I kind of don’t want a cleaned up one?

listen to these hot tunes to get pumped up

I’d really like to see Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s filmography get Criterion releases.

Me too! There was a big traveling retrospective of most of his films a year or two ago. I’m not sure if it was all just pristine 35 mm prints or digital restorations but everything seemed to be really good quality, I hope that means better quality dvd releases of some of the films are coming soon.

In Taiwan there are finally some more respectably packaged collections of his films available, but I have no idea if the actual quality is different from the cheap versions that were already available.

BTW @jjsimpso, I’m back in TW now doing dissertation stuff. Still remember the advice you gave me when I first came here a long time ago. (I was evnvnv on the old forum)

If Criterion doesn’t get their act together wrt Taiwanese directors, l’ll have to look into those TW editions.

Ah, yes. Your Taiwan experience now far exceeds mine. If I ever go back, and I’d love to, I’ll be sure to ask you for advice!
