Is that from best to worst or vice versa? I played a little of Devils Third and outside of the opening where you’re edgelord character is playing the drums in his quadruple maximum security jail cell, the gameplay seemed really flat.
i agree with you
i don’t think that kunoichi is a better game than its predecessor so much as it is more of a trasheteria based on the original game’s serious mechanical focus and thus is easier for me to find that specific kind of joy in. shinobi is enormously underrated, it’s a very meticulously designed thing, kunoichi is a super specific parody of that thing to me.
it’s still fun to play, what it lacks in virtuosity it makes up for in weird excess
it has that vibe y’know
Best to worst lmao but who cares. Devils third is sick
oh! yes! it’s perfect
user title please
hi, this is Otogi
especially when From decides later on in the game that levels shouldn’t have ground anymore, actually
anyway my brain is hurting because I get the spirit of the thread but I will not accept the word “trash” being used in relation to Binary Domain, the greatest tie-in game for a movie that should exist
Yakuza Dead Souls is trash and I love it for that, a dumb, very of its time zombie third person shooter shoehorned into the PS3 Yakuza engine and universe. OF…JI ENDO
Y’all getting in to all this cover shooter talk and nobody has even brought up Kill Switch, the Namco Xbox game that did it before Gears made it cool.
should go further back to winback
Honestly no, Ys 6/8/Origins/etc are way too good and Ys 7/Memories are not compelling enough
But « No attack button, just bump into every enemy at mach speed » instantly makes Old Ys a perfect fit though
The japanese ARPG genre is a goldmine for compelling trash action… Old Ys, Trials of Mana, Dragon View, Star Ocean, Threads of Fate, Final fantasy Type 0…
Oh this s angood one, but the PS2 Ghost Rider is a fa tastic DMC clone with low production values and the ability to play as Blade
I am glad you fixed this. Also there’s like 50% chance depending on how you read stuff in 4 and 5 that this game is canon. I think it is.
Also Binary Domain is like the only Nagoshi/RgG Studio thing not related to Yakuza like ever and I kinda love it for that alone.
How could I forget Dead Souls, thanks for bringing it up! The story has more to it than you’d expect, the combat is like Alpha Binary Domain basically. Go on dates outside the quarantine zone and shoot zombies with hostesses. The Amon fight in this one is a ridiculously long proc gen sewer dungeon that ends with the original Amon as a lich that you shoot with a railgun. It’s stupid and fun!
Devil Kings is even better trash for it’s aggressive localisation
Oni (PS2, PC) is just so close to being legitimately great. It’s shameless GitS fanboyism is cute and the fighting system is totally free-form. At least with m+kb controls on PC, it feels really good. It’s just too sloppy and arbitrary to support much mastery.
Also the game’s very obviously unfinished, but I love big angular empty spaces so that’s fine.
Someone posted footage of the original version of Dead to Rights on here not too long ago and it was originally an Escape from New York game, yeah. I posted a little about it. And Dead to Rights totally belongs in this thread, that game is fucking ridiculous.
i’ve never played oni, but i remember a time in the mid-00s when anywhere selling preowned games would have literally hundreds of copies of it. my friend owned a market stall selling preowned games, so when one of the big chains had an offer whereby you could trade in any 5 ps2 games and get any new release, regardless of the value of what you were trading in, he drove a few of us to all the branches, going to several branches of that chain to trade in his garbage stock for stuff he could sell for £30+ each.
they weren’t all copies of oni, but a fair few were
Maken Shao/X is some wild trash
Kaneko from Megaten is involved but the atmosphere is closer to Illbleed. The running animations are amazing
maken x rules!! though i’ve only ever played the dreamcast original and the first person makes me nauseous after a while lol
Oni has legit some of the best feeling brawler controls but it’s hard as fuck and obviously unfinished and it kind of starts to weigh the game down near the end. I absolutely adore it, it’s not as good as Shogo though in terms of weebiness
the era all of these games are from was when I decided to stop playing video games. IC and SB loved all of them and I just thought they were all shit. treasure died and platinum took their place as darling japanese action game designers and I hated platinum. every game was a gears of war clone and I hated gears of war. I’ve basically never recovered
