shocked to learn that the new ultimate spider-man #1 is actually pretty good and interesting.

thanx to my secretion santa for gifting me a recent issue of IDW Sonic i got off my ass and housed the rest of the issues i hadnt caught up on

I really really love the idw sonic comics lol i have such an eternal deep down love for Sonic Hedgehog and all his shitty little friends and their lore, and adored the Archie comics when i was a kid (i actually read them and watched the cartoon before i ever played any of the games!) So not only does it make me happy to see my boy Ian “the Potto” Flynn made good, it rules to read comic stories about these characters that are actually fun and dramatic and well-told. and tonally fitting lol. Like i have so much time for furry melodrama but there’s a lot to be said for knowing just how seriously you should take your cast of funny pantsless animals

Anyway this post was just an excuse to post surge the tenrec if you know literally anything about me it will not surprise you that i LOVE her

i wanna play a spinoff game starring this bitch like yesterday

whisper the sniper wolf also kicks ass this comics OCs are cooler than anything sega has ever come up with

Though even Sonic is really written and characterized and gets to say some badass shit!!

you’ve also read the kit and surge gaiden series imposter syndrome, right?

big same, the sonic cast stands alongside the king of fighters cast for me in terms of characters i just totally fucking love.

hellyeah

Yes i read all of Imposter Syndrome in like one sitting it slaps. I really love that Surge/Kit/Starline are directly inspired by visual sprite glitches (eg https://info.sonicretro.org/Ashura) and how that is directly relevant to them as ersatz Sonic/Tails/Eggman. it is amazing that this comic takes 3 extant “Sonic’s rival/foil” characters*, manages to individually characterize them so they dont feel like repetitions of the same ideas, and then for the hell of it adds another one. whos the best yet especially if you like angsty juvvies/banchos with funny faces and sharp fangies

and i gotta mention the absurd/clever meta joke of tenrecs being kinda “false hedgehogs” in that they have similar behavior, body, and ecological niche while being completely unrelated. Sonic taught me what critters like hedgehogs and echidnas were lol, i love that IDW found an excuse to do it again

*(the other 3 are Mecha/Metal Sonic, Shadow, and Silver of course. and how the fuck did they manage to make me care about and like silver the hedgehog beyond laughing at “IT’S NO USE!!!”) (good writing that’s how)

does north america not have hedgehogs? in the uk, they’re much-loved creatures that come into your back garden in the winter and people leave food and milk out for them.

read sonic #68 this morning. it’s a little disppointing to have a filler issue between 67’s cliffhanger and the main series taking a break to make way for the fang miniseries, but at least is was a really good filler issue. excellent art with some amazing colours, and a nice anti-colonialism message for the kids.

At least not in my neck of the woods. Small critters include squirrels, racoons, possums. Occasionally foxes/skunks/chipmunks.

Deer abound.

Instead of an adorable array of little fuzzy hedge animals our small mammal brigade is led by the raccoon, who is the size of 2 housecats and will scream at you for trying to stop him from eating trash. This probably explains a lot of differences between England and America

I think even their badgers are less menacing

i want to see the america exclusive critters. i want to be screamed at by a raccoon and hissed at by an annoyed possum

i did have a moment once years ago where a hedgehog was convinced it could threaten me because i was squatting down. very brave until i stood up and it realized i was much taller than it had assumed

Never really been a manga person but I recently read all of Battle Angel Alita through my library. Also started Beserk and Mob Psycho 100.

binge reading murciélago and these two (collectively known as puppet, no clue what their deal is yet) are such a perfect design

it’s kind of unhinged and perverse, but it’s developed into this thing where all these girls and women who are murderers or otherwise fucked up just keep gathering together into a larger group of friends/family/lovers who hang out and do fun things inbetween having to deal with whatever new violence is gonna happen. also a lot of lesbian fucking of varying degrees of sickness, albeit in the less explicit form of a non-porn comic. probably should warn this includes incest every so often. also our main character is like if we crossed alucard from hellsing with a lesbian ataru moroboshi

occasionally it dips into a more serious mode and it feels sick as hell to look at. don’t worry, a few pages later this crying girl is happy as can be in chibi form because she got distracted with like, a pastry

this comic is stupid i like it

back in the 90s, robin #19 predicted the rise of the “western civilisation” dickheads

I don’t know that’d I say predicted. Those dorks were cliché even back then.

Well, Dixon needed a self-insert.

Also, we’d all do well to work “Unhand me you plebian swine” into our normal lexicon.

over the past couple months i’ve read a lot of comics. it’s now among my favorite things to do, as i can read 'em on work breaks and on the bus. here’s a quick rundown of a few of them:

FOOL NIGHT
very Of It’s Time tale of labor precarity at the end of the world. the sun is gone and oxygen has become a taxable commodity. in most developed countries you can apply for assisted suicide in the form of slowly turning your body into a plant – in turn, you get a fat monetary benefit from the state upfront that you can enjoy until you stop being fully human.

really lovely characters and artstyle. either this manga will go down as a forgotten gem or it will be picked up by a big anime studio in the next couple years and become huge.

AJIN
started watching the cartoon version and was like “oh, this is really cool but the epic evil villain’s plans make no sense and everyone else is just so dumb its kinda irritating”. i liked enough of the premise that i decided to check the comic because at the very least it would be faster. guess what? the anime takes all sorts of shortcuts with the plot so when you read the manga, things actually make sense.

it’s super fun. love the gunfights in this. well done manga gunfights are great and ajin has them. the ending is particularly bullshit but who cares

IKOKU NIKKI
very touching domestic drama. i’ve recommended it to my mom once and a couple days later she came up to me with teary eyes being like "bless that older girl but why does she have to be so mean to her sister . . . ". just all-timer stuff, although it’s clearly not the type of comic i usually read so everything it does feels novel. it’s the little things.

DANDADAN
intense, well choreographed action and super clean artstyle / character mannerisms. it’s really gross how it treats the girl protagonist for fanservice though so there’s that huge caveat.

DAI DARK
one of the things i love the most about dorohedoro is how laser-focused and straightforward it plays everything. dai dark is definitely not nearly as focused of a story it is very straightforward. basically a gag manga for the first couple volumes that i’ve read and it’s amazing.

i like how they are constantly talking of possessing / consuming / taking / using other people’s bones

reading the first volume of a silent voice just makes me realize i handle fictional bullying a LOT worse than fictional kids murdering each other scenarios
