i’ll always be suspicious of how they all acted like horatio at rampage was some absolute tyrant who was absolutely incompetent despite keeping rampage network going for years but I’m not in the know so suspicions will remain that

I’ll go to bat for a good chunk of pre-Paying For It Chester Brown. I def started ripping off Harold Grey’s body types and postures thanks to him. Joe Matt’s fucking bad though. Joe Matt gotta be like 80% responsible for that “these publishers are all about sad white guy masturbating autobio books” stereotype.

You’ll probably dig Seth’s other stuff Loki, Wimbledon Green might be up your alley, I once had a very awkward encounter with Seth as I exited the bathroom at MoCCA one year, I have never felt like a bigger, sweatier, sloppier oaf than I did in that moment.

I keep this book on my nightstand. I don’t know why. It’s just really small and I forget it’s there, I guess. I don’t even know if I’ve read all of it. The text is very tiny!! It’s a nice little object though.

speaking of webcomics, i read the published version of “crisis zone”, the megg and mogg webcomic that came out during the pandemic. i’ve only read bits and pieces of megg and mogg before this, always felt like i was on the outside looking in, didnt really “get it”.

i liked crisis zone quite a bit. it can be annoying and rambling at times, but it embodies a lot of what i like about comics. its trashy. its very funny. its a good soap opera and sitcom without caring too much about overarching plot and “lore”. i guess you can argue it can be problematic (though i think the problematic parts are solidly character-based, not author-based), but its one artist’s voice and its incredibly impressive he published a page of this daily for over 9 months.

After Crisis Zone, I went back and plowed through some of the earlier Megg and Mogg books. I’ll forever have a soft spot for the Young Ones-style dysfunctional roommates set up.

Oh yeah, I’ve had a good time with Megahex. Really funny and often pretty real. I gave it as a gift to someone years ago* and they posted panels from it last month which made me feel like a very good gift-giver.

*This was from a year when I gave everyone comics for Christmas. I should do that again.

Both of this author’s books are now in stock on the publisher’s site if anyone else was, like me, curious about them.

got my copy of 2120 by George Wylesol, a CYOA-style/point-and-click story

you control wade duffy, a computer repairman sent to fix a computer in 2120 macmillan drive

currently picking up crap in the alley

edit: I found a computer! I have some passwords to find!!

edit 2: so far I am enjoying the effect: tediously flipping forward and back through mostly-identical corridors, noticing that the page numbers for retracing my steps have changed, full-page art of a different subject appearing ‘suddenly’, ‘shockingly’, putting related scenes on adjacent pages to speed it up. nice

Picked this up at the bookstore this weekend. I wanted to get this and the new dr naso, but they were out of stock already. Didn’t realize his stuff was getting to be that big.

Also enjoying it a whole bunch, really liked interactive fiction as a youth via choose your own adventures and encyclopedia browns. appreciate how this one is working so far, wylesol is very good at creating anxiety. Love all the flat colors and textures of things. rn I seem to be stuck in a room with a very shiny man !!

i’ve only thumbed through this guys comics at the library, cant bring myself to delve into it. his airplane instruction guide art style is a near repellent to me

I know there’s intention to this schtick but i got the idea between thumbing through some pages and reading a few of the effusive reviews for his prior award winning book. also he’s on like book #3 of using this style. not sure if i want to read through 200-300 pages of anodyne artwork about how anodyne life is in america.

if i did read it, though, i’d write something comparing him to george wylesol. Wyelsol feels like the crunchier, non-literati approved version of drnaso.

Ah, yeah, I’d say that’s a fair reason to not get into drnaso. I really like that monotonous style of his, but i also remember asking for those airplane instructional pamphlets from my parents when i was a kid. i don’t really know/follow stuff about comics. i mostly like to just browse the store and pick up what looks interesting and kinda follow that thread. but i can see drnaso having a waspy literati following. i like his stuff, but it feels like something that will be adapted into a bad Netflix original or something. haven’t read anything else by wylesol but do agree that hits stuff feels immediately more interesting. gonna look for more of his stuff next time !

Getting further into 2120 feels very good. just going off highschool memory here, but it reminds me of the castle a lot. like crushing weight of beaurocacy shit. my partner tells me the book smells like a musty, old office but it doesn’t really bother me. i like having to take notes which maybe i should do for keeping track of where I’m going because the halls and rooms can be disorienting.

reading manga on my new ereader. after 22 chapters of Ookumo-chan Flashback I realized the translation credits page always had a cool look, and I decided to actually read through it. and, wow, of all the pages I could have read this has to be the one

Dakka lost his fucking hands?? “SORRY MOMFUCKERS”???

I’m thinking of reading Chainsaw Man and I Am A Hero. Does anyone have any opinions about either of these?

btw, Ookumo-chan Flashback was very cute and brilliantly evasive to the point of exquisite torture (like, you’re constantly saying 'I can’t believe it’s managing to walk this line for this long…), but it doesn’t end too great. I’d still recommend it.

Chainsaw Man is good, and the author’s previous series, Fire Punch, is even better

Don’t remember who made the joke originally but Chainsaw Man is the anti-eva, in that its about a horny guy who gets depression instead of a depressed guy who gets horny
